Helicobacter pylori kann Magengeschwüre und Krebs hervorrufen. Mehr als die Hälfe der Erdbevölkerung trägt eine Form des Bakteriums in sich. Die Bakterien treten dabei auf verschiedenen Kontinenten in abgewandelter Form auf. Bisher unterschieden Biologen fünf Bakterienpopulationen.
