Ensuring Consistent Quality in Engine Manufacturing

Vögtlin presents Innovative Solution for Testing of Injection-Molded Parts

(PresseBox) (Muttenz, )
In the pursuit of maintaining consistent quality in the production of injection-molded parts for engine manufacturing, it is crucial to ensure all channels are free and unobstructed.
The combination of applying a fixed test pressure and flow measurement provides valuable insights into the quality of the components under examination.

Application
During the production of motor components using the injection molding process, the occurrence of blowhole inclusions in hidden channels is a common challenge. These can lead to channel narrowing or even complete blockage, compromising the smooth flow of the intended medium.

Challenge
Previously, the only option for inspection was through time-consuming endoscopic methods, which were not suitable for automation due to the need for short cycle times.
The task was to develop a testing method that enables efficient inspection for cavities within the shortest possible cycle times.

Solution
The Vögtlin electronic pressure controller equipped with a pressure transmitter offers a comprehensive approach. This advanced solution allows for the determination of channel narrowing or blockage by utilizing a predefined test pressure and precisely measuring the flow. This enables quick differentiation between compliant and reject parts within very short cycle times.
The customer initiates a leakage test for the entire system. A master part, determined through endoscopic examination, serves as the benchmark for subsequent inspections. The flow rate is then measured at a test pressure of for ex. 30 mbar g. This value serves as a reference for evaluating other parts of the series.
Depending on the size of potential blockages, a noticeable decrease in flow rate may occur while maintaining a consistent test pressure. This cost-effective and efficient method ensures reliable inspection of hard-to-reach hollow spaces and channels.
