The basis for determining innovative strength was the analysis of the worldwide patenting activities of the German companies studied over the last ten years. The study looked at so-called patent families, i. e. the number of patents with the same content but different inventors for over 500 fields of technology and knowledge. For the patent analyses, the study used data from the EPO Worldwide Patent Statistical Database (PATSTAT) of the European Patent Office.
Two quantitative metrics were used to identify the German innovation leaders. The metric 'leadership' assesses how strongly an invention influences other inventions. The metric 'novelty/innovativeness' is used to examine how strongly an invention can distinguish itself from previous inventions. If both metrics are depicted as axes in a coordinate system, it can be determined to what extent these criteria apply to the inventions examined. Accordingly, innovation leaders are companies that are extremely innovative, whose innovations have a significant influence on the corresponding field of innovation and who lead the innovation competition.
TRACTO was awarded as "Germany's Innovation Leader" in the category 'Earth or Rock Drilling; Mining'. For the traditionally innovative company, the award is both an incentive to further advance trenchless technology by providing innovative solutions and a nice confirmation for the inventiveness of the developers and designers of the Nodig systems "Made in Sauerland".
