Figures indicate the advantages of the minimally invasive NODIG-technology
The advantages of the minimally invasive trenchless technology as opposed to the open trench method are obvious: it saves time, money and resources due to valuable surfaces not being disrupted, excavation and reinstatement work being significantly reduced, traffic jams or diversions being avoided, emissions of noise, CO2 and fine dust being kept to a minimum and construction times being much shorter.
Future infrastructural projects, such as the supply of green energy or the expansion of fibre-optic cable networks, benefit from the gentle trenchless technology, as do water and sewage pipe installations, e-mobility or pipeline construction. The figures speak for themselves, as the following examples demonstrate:
- A jobsite using the open trench method incurs 40,228 € in natural capital costs, whereby the costs of a trenchless method are estimated at 1,662 € at the expense of natural capital, therefore only 4%
- UK water supplier Wessex Water claims they saved around 255,000 tonnes of materials in 2018 by applying trenchless techniques, which resulted in keeping 30.000 trucks off Wessex’s roads
- Comparative studies by the GSTT have shown that resource consumption is 50 times lower with trenchless constructions in the HDD field than with the open trench method, fine dust emissions are 110 times lower and 15.5% less damage is caused to adjacent pipelines
- 377,000 tonnes CO2 were saved during a trenchless ND 2600 sewage pipe installation over a total length of 5.7 km in Warsaw, according to a study by GSTT
Since the invention of the GRUNDOMAT-soil displacement hammer some sixty years ago, the German manufacturer TRACTO has had a major influence on this industry and is currently working on the vision of autonomous drilling. TRACTO’s decades of experience flow primarily into the intelligent NODIG systems „Made in Sauerland“ and their constant improvement. Today, TRACTO’s trenchless systems include innovative drilling equipment and accessories for the complete range of applications in pipe installations and in all soil types for supply and disposal, including the house connection technology. Starting with soil displacement hammers for short non-steerable bores, pipe ramming for pipeline constructions, steerable HDD rigs of the mini and midi class for complex bore paths, up to the pipe bursting systems for underground pipe renewals.
Further solution modules for more productivity and economic efficiency in trenchless pipe installations are specially tailored digital tools and services, such as financing solutions, used machine supply, or even a geological service. This complete package of high-quality drilling rigs, innovative technical solutions and comprehensive service enables civil engineering companies to master, both successfully and profitably, even the most complex pipeline construction projects.
Educating the public and decision-makers
„Trenchless technology is the only answer to the challenges of modern infrastructure”. It is not just TRACTO who is convinced of this. Experts such as Jari Kaukonen, chairman of the ISTT International Society for Trenchless Technology, is also certain that trenchless constructions will be the rule, rather than the exception, in pipeline constructions in the future. He expects more and more infrastructure owners to follow examples, such as that of the Finnish Road Administration (Väylä), which only issue permits for trenchless installations when setting up new pipelines in their areas. Jari Kaukonen sees the key to more trenchless pipeline construction projects in educating the client side about the advantages of NODIG. “Many clients are unaware of the options we have for trenchless installations and i personally think this is the main reason why they have not yet realised that NODIG is the only acceptable method for pipeline construction”.
TRACTO also uses its expertise to further develop, promote and sustainably establish the market for trenchless technology worldwide. A special service for “Trenchless Development” uses a whole range of measures to provide targeted information to the public and decision-makers in civil engineering in order to create more trust in NODIG technology. In this way, pipeline construction projects in the future will increasingly involve trade associations in shaping global standards and regulations. Also, not only the client side benefits, but ultimately the entire civil engineering industry.
TRACTO to show the future of pipeline construction at Bauma 2022
All around the megatrends of digitalisation and sustainability, bauma 2022 will focus on the topics of “Construction methods and materials of tomorrow” and “Zero emissions in the construction machinery industry”, among many others. These are precisely the topics that TRACTO serves with its trenchless technology and will be presenting in Munich with an exciting mix of proven technology and visionary ideas on an exhibition space of about 1,000 m².
The TRACTO product range starts with classic trenchless machines, such as soil displacement hammers, pipe rammers or pipe bursting systems for pipe renewals, through to smart Mini-HDD rigs and the HDD rock drilling technology and then up to highly automated steerable drill rigs, which can carry out underground drilling completely via remote control, but also tunnelling machines and power packs with electrical motors. The international team at TRACTO looks forward to presenting the pipeline construction solutions of the future to the trade experts and the general public from 24th to 30th October 2022 at Stand FN 521/1.
