With this new plant, Stadtwerke Erfurt are demonstrating their commitment to a sustainable and CO₂-free energy supply. Power-to-heat technology efficiently converts electricity from renewable energy sources into heat via an electrode boiler. This is particularly useful in times of high wind and solar energy feed-in, as it helps to relieve the burden on the electricity grid and react flexibly to fluctuations. The new P2H plant in Erfurt therefore combines grid stability with a sustainable, CO₂ -free heat supply.
Tilo Kummer, Thuringia's Minister for the Environment, Energy, Nature Conservation and Forestry, praised the commissioning of the plant as a groundbreaking milestone for Stadtwerke Erfurt on its path to decarbonising the municipal energy infrastructure successfully: “In future, this plant will relieve the burden on the electricity grid and enable surplus electricity from renewable sources to be used to supply Erfurt with heat at low cost. At the same time, natural gas will be conserved, which will help to protect the climate. The 20-megawatt electrode boiler can convert electricity into high temperatures and hot water, which is then stored in heat accumulators. This makes the project exemplary for the transformation of the energy supply in Thuringia.”<
"We have implemented many projects with Kraftanlagen, always achieving a high standard and on schedule," says Marco Türke, power plant manager at SWE Energie GmbH, Stadtwerke Erfurt, summarising the project and cooperation with Kraftanlagen Energies & Services.
In future, the new power-to-heat plant will be able to supply heat to up to 2,000 households in the Erfurt area.
