Unerwünschte Arzneimittelwirkungen stellen eine erhebliche Gefährdung für den Patienten dar und sind mit hohen Behandlungskosten behaftet. Schätzungen zufolge sind Arzneimittelnebenwirkungen in den USA die vier bis sechs häufigste Todesursache. In ihrem Vortrag "Arzneimittelsicherheit in Deutschland: gegenwärtiger Stand und Perspektiven" erläutert Edeltraut Garbe, Professorin im Fachbereich Human- und Gesundheitswissenschaften und dem Bremer Institut für Präventionsforschung und Sozialmedizin (BIPS) der Universität Bremen, warum trotz aufwändiger und teurer klinischer Studien vor Zulassung eines Arzneimittels seltene, schwerwiegende Arzneimittelnebenwirkungen des neuen Medikaments in der Regel nicht erkannt werden. Dem System der Arzneimittelüberwachung nach Zulassung kommt deshalb eine herausragende Bedeutung für eine sichere Arzneimitteltherapie zu. Garbe
