Zirka 1 bis 2,5 Milliarden Dollar werden heute aufgewendet, um ein neues Arzneimittel auf den Markt zu bringen. Sicherheits- und Wirksamkeitstests an Tieren sind sehr teuer. Von den 11,4 Millionen Tieren, die laut EU-Statistik im Jahre 2011 in Forschung und Entwicklung eingesetzt wurden, diente der überwiegende Teil diesem Zweck. 85 Prozent dieser Arzneimittel-Entwicklungen werden abgebrochen, da die darauf folgende Erprobung am Menschen entweder inakzeptable Nebenwirkungen oder keine verbesserte Wirkung im Vergleich zu bereits vorhandenen Arzneimitteln zeigen. Der Test am Tier ist immer nur begrenzt aussagekräftig für die Wirkung auf den Menschen. Die TU Berlin will deshalb mit der Entwicklung von
