Weiße Zwerge, Neutronensterne und Quarksterne: Dies alles sind Endstadien der Sternentwicklung, sozusagen "Sternleichen". Wenn der Brennstoff für die Kernfusion im Inneren eines Sterns verbraucht ist, schrumpft sein Zentralbereich mangels thermischen Gegendrucks. Gleichzeitig wird die äußere Hülle abgestoßen. Zurück bleibt ein extrem kompakter Reststern. Wie dicht aber kann ein solches Objekt eigentlich werden? Wodurch bleibt es stabil?
