An industry team including Nortel(1) (TSX: NT)(NYSE: NT) has demonstrated how network management systems based on different standards can interoperate to help service providers increase revenue opportunities from converged networks without having to re-invent the wheel.

The demonstration took place at TeleManagement World 2007 in Nice, France as part of the TeleManagement Forum´s Catalyst Showcase, which featured collaborative solutions to real-world networking challenges. Nortel participated in the "Harmony" Catalyst, sponsored by BT Group and TeliaSonera and focused on "Converging Standards to Integrate Emerging Technology."

Convergence of public telco and private enterprise networking, as illustrated by the arrival of carrier-grade Ethernet and Provider Backbone Transport (PBT), has created a need for common network management across technologies traditionally addressed by differing network management standards.

"It´s no secret that video and high-bandwidth applications are straining today´s network resources," said Scott McFeely, vice president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. "We´ve now shown that service providers can introduce PBT-enabled carrier Ethernet solutions rapidly, cost-effectively and without disruption to operations and support systems. We continue to expand the capabilities of our PBT-based Metro Ethernet solution with an emphasis on operational solutions for service providers as they migrate to Ethernet."

The Harmony Catalyst demonstrated how service providers can seamlessly integrate PBT-based Metro Ethernet and other new technologies into their networks using an enhanced operational environment that builds on established network management interfaces. Seven management packages, three next-generation network products and multiple TeleManagement Forum technical initiatives were combined to demonstrate effective element, resource and service management for multimedia services in a next-generation network employing PBT.

The demonstration applied standards developed between the TeleManagement Forum and the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) in a real-world application, showcasing how emerging technology can be adopted without disrupting operations. It showed how the latest standards toolkit can be used to evolve and simplify network management.
