Vom 25. bis 27. November 2008 findet in Nürnberg die "SPS/IPC/Drives 2008" statt, die europaweit führende Fachmesse für Automatisierungstechnik mit rund 1 400 Ausstellern aus aller Welt. Darunter befinden sich rund 100 Unternehmen aus Nordbayern, die meisten davon aus der Metropolregion Nürnberg. Die Produktpalette der Unternehmen reicht von Antrieben und Steuerungen für Industrieanlagen über Fertigungskonzepte beispielsweise für Solarfabriken bis zu Software-Lösungen für alle Anwendungen der Automatisierung.

Die nordbayerischen Industrie- und Handelskammern haben unter Federführung der IHK Nürnberg für Mittelfranken die regionalen Unternehmen und Institutionen in dem Netzwerk "Automation Valley Nordbayern" gebündelt.
