Mit der Erfindung der Glasfaser entstand die Möglichkeit, Licht durch ein Kabel zu leiten. Zusammen mit der notwendigen Technologie für die Erzeugung und Aufnahme der Lichtsignale durch Halbleiter-Laser und -Dioden wurde eine Methode zur Datenübertragung entwickelt, welche mittlerweile technisch größere Möglichkeiten zulässt als das Kupferkabel und darüber hinaus auch noch wirtschaftlicher ist. Die technische Bezeichnung für eine Glasfaser ist Lichtwellenleiter (LWL; fibre optics). Glasfaserkabel bieten eine enorme Bandbreite über große Entfernungen und sind unempfindlich gegenüber elektromagnetischen Störungen. Sie werden z.B. in Hochgeschwindigkeitsnetzen beim Kabelfernsehen und beim Telefonnetz eingesetzt.
