Rund 50 Prozent beträgt heute der Stahlanteil eines Mittelklasse-Autos. Da Autos immer leichter, preiswerter und sicherer sein müssen, kämpft der Werkstoff Stahl zunehmend mit alternativen Materialien wie Aluminium oder Kunststoff. Die hohen Stahlpreise stellen aus der Sicht der Stahlindustrie aber keine ernsthafte Bedrohung für den Werkstoff Stahl im Automobil dar, da sich auch andere Rohstoffe verteuert haben und sich die Stahlindustrie durch die Neuentwicklung von höchstfesten Stählen und speziellen Blechen an die Bedürfnisse der Auto-Hersteller angepasst haben.
