Dr. Bernhard Reutersberg, CEO of E.ON Ruhrgas AG, is convinced that natural gas will play a key role in the transition to low-carbon energy supply and a sustainable energy mix. "Natural gas is the cleanest of all fossil fuels, with the best climate and environmental credentials. International policy-makers must recognise and duly take account of the key role played by gas in energy efficiency and climate protection," he stressed at the World Gas Conference in Buenos Aires. The conference is considered to be the most important forum for the international gas industry. It enables experts from this industry to discuss economic prospects, political conditions and the latest technical trends.

Today efficient technologies are available for the use of gas, such as gas-fired condensing systems or packaged cogeneration plants. The gas industry is working intensively on technologies for the future, such as gas heat pumps, cogeneration systems and fuel cells, so that they quickly reach market maturity. "Gas can thus make a valuable contribution to achieving climate targets - above all it can do so cost-effectively," Mr. Reutersberg stated. Despite the currently slack demand for gas worldwide, he sees good prospects for volume growth in Europe in the medium to long term. "Gas will be able to expand further its position in the European energy mix - even in a changing market and under significantly different conditions."

Safeguarding gas supplies for Europe on a long-term basis is, according to Mr. Reutersberg, one of the main goals of E.ON Ruhrgas. The company's gas supplies rest on three pillars: Apart from long-term pipeline gas deliveries, E.ON Ruhrgas is increasing its own gas production and LNG business. In the long run, the company intends to achieve over 10 billion m³ of equity gas production. A few weeks ago the first production platform operated by E.ON Ruhrgas was completed for the Babbage gas field in the British North Sea. In Mr. Reutersberg's view, this reflects the determination with which the energy company is promoting exploration and production. "The development of new growth areas and the broad diversification of our gas supplies form a good basis for continuing to play a leading role in the European gas market," Mr. Reutersberg stressed in his keynote address.
