Der Weltfernmeldetag wurde 1967 durch die Internationale Fernmeldeunion ausgerufen und ist von der UNO als internationaler Gedenktag anerkannt. Der Tag findet in Anlehnung an das Gründungsdatum der Internationalen Fernmeldeunion ITU im Jahre 1865 statt.
