Improved and reliable materials for efficient thermal power plants

(PresseBox) (Düsseldorf, )
The 2nd International Conference "Alloys in Power Plant Technology", hosted by the Association of German Engineers (VDI) on November 26th and 27th, 2013 in Berlin, Germany is to focus on the technical and economic challenges in terms of materials technology in the power station sector

New legal regulations and the increasing production of renewable energy have implications for conventional power plant technology, which shall become more flexible and efficient. Necessary for this change are materials and material concepts that are heat resistant, safe to process and cost-effective. The 2nd International VDI-conference "Alloys in Power Plant Technology" on November 26th and 27th in Berlin will discuss the latest findings in the field of materials technology. Chairman of the conference is Prof. Karl Maile, Deputy Head of the Materials Testing Institute University of Stuttgart. He stresses that "high-efficiency power plants of the future that can flexibly endure changes in load are only feasible, if reliably qualified materials with improved properties are made available. This also includes the finding of the solutions to related problems involving the production and processing of components."

Properties and applications of new materials in the field of the USC- technology will be an important topic at the conference. For example, speakers from Großkraftwerk Mannheim (GKM, Germany) and Hitachi (Japan) will present and discuss current findings on materials for new power plant concepts. In addition, specialists will examine the particular features of new alloys designed specifically for use in the making of boilers, pipes and turbines. Experts will discuss practical examples, problems and approaches to solutions - including the processing of T24. Craig Degnan from E.ON UK will be providing updates regarding new material concepts, including the current state of development for MARBN steel.

Furthermore, the conference will deal with possibilities for assessing the lifetimes of critical power plant components. Maile stated that, "changes in load profiles leads to effects upon material behavior as well as the resulting damage mechanisms and, thus, the life cycle of the components. It is important to use the characteristic material properties and failure behavior in order to create appropriate and relevant methods of lifetime estimation." Presenters from RTM (Italy) and VTT (Finland) will share various procedures and methods for reliably monitoring conditions and tracking life cycles. Christian Scholz from Siemens and Tilmann Beck from Forschungszentrum Jülich will outline their current research and testing of coating concepts used in gas turbines. There will also be presentations on practically relevant topics from Alstom Power, Doosan Babcock and many other international experts.

Supporting organisations for this conference are: European Power Plant Suppliers Association (EPPSA) and the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS).

This international conference addresses specialists and operators, manufacturers and suppliers, as well as consultant engineers, quality inspectors and research personnel in power plant technology throughout Europe.
