Im Oktober 2005 hat die Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes im Auftrag des Freistaates Bayern die Durchführung des Max Weber-Programms zur Hochbegabtenförderung im Rahmen des Elitenetzwerks übernommen. Für dessen Stipendiaten wird es auch im August 2008 wieder eine zweiwöchige Sommerakademie geben, die in Ftan im schweizerischen Engadin stattfindet. Von der Universität Bayreuth wird Juniorprofessor Dr. Cord Müller (Theoretische Physik/Bild) dort zusammen mit Prof. Dr. Andreas Buchleitner (Universität Freiburg) eine Arbeitsgruppe leiten, die sich dem Thema "Information - von Quanten zu Genen" widmen wird. Information, der neutrale Inbegriff des Wissens, ist selbst zum Gegenstand naturwissenschaftlicher Forschung geworden. Zum einen ist "Information" geeignet, so umfassende physikalische Theorien wie Thermodynamik und Statistik zu begründen. Zum anderen braucht man zum Speichern und Transportieren von Informationen selbst wieder physikalische Träger, die prinzipiell den Gesetzen der Quantentheorie unterliegen. Die Arbeitsgruppe wird sich deshalb den Grundlagen und Anwendungen des Informationsbegriffs widmen, also von den aktuellen Konzepten und Experimenten der Quanteninformation über kuriose Konsequenzen der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie bis hin zum genetischen Code. Neben der inhaltlichen Arbeit und anregenden Abendveranstaltungen werden die Gäste der Sommerakademie auch Gelegenheit haben, die hochalpine Welt des Engadins zu genießen. Wer erfolgreich an einer bayerischen Hochschule studiert, kann übrigens aus dem Studium heraus in das Max Weber-Programm aufgenommen werden. Vorschlagsberechtigt sind alle Hochschullehrer und promovierten wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter, die Elitestudiengänge und das Prüfungsamt. Auch eine Eigenbewerbung ist möglich.
