Platinum, palladium and battery metals

Platinum and palladium could be hiding a renaissance. Also Battery metals are increasingly in demand.

(PresseBox) (Herisau, )
Palladium is scratching the USD 1,000 mark. Chart technicians see an important barrier at USD 1,041 per troy ounce. A jump above this resistance would trigger a wave of buying. Platinum currently costs around USD 1,094 per ounce and is currently experiencing a price rally. This would only be interrupted if the price were to fall below USD 1,054. Demand for platinum from China is increasing. Both the platinum and palladium markets are in deficit and this could increase. The World Platinum Investment Council forecasts a platinum deficit of around 500,000 ounces for 2025. The reasons for this are, on the one hand, a shrinking supply from South Africa and, on the other, a decline in recycling volumes. Fewer automotive catalytic converters are being recycled as the average age of vehicles has risen, particularly in the USA.

There could therefore be an upward trend ahead for both metals and the associated shares. And for many major platinum metal producers, prices are (still) low. Today, around 65% of global platinum and palladium production flows into automotive catalytic converters. If overall sales of vehicles with combustion engines remain stable, and it looks like they will, and if the rise of hybrid cars continues, platinum group metals will be in high demand. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are gaining market share, and they require more platinum group metals than combustion engines. The number of electric vehicles is likely to increase, but whether this will slow down the expected increase in hybrids remains questionable. Hydrogen-powered vehicles could also conquer the market and thus boost PGM consumption.
