No greener future without battery metals

(PresseBox) (Herisau, )
Without batteries, energy from the sun and wind cannot be stored. Electric cars also rely on storage batteries.

Batteries are the ultimate in the energy transition. As a result, demand for them and the raw materials used in their manufacture continues to grow strongly. In China, the world's largest car market, almost half of all new registrations are now "new energy vehicles." Of these, around 60 percent are purely battery powered. The trend toward electric cars can also be observed in the US, Latin America, and Africa. Nickel is one of the well-known raw materials required, along with lithium and cobalt. The future supply of nickel is not necessarily secure. Around 70 percent of nickel demand still comes primarily from stainless steel production. According to estimates, demand from the electric mobility industry could reach 500,000 tons this year.

This would already represent around 15 percent of total global demand. Lithium and cobalt are mined in Chile and Congo, among other places, and mining is problematic due to the conditions there. Even though there are still discussions in the EU about phasing out combustion engines from 2035, the future belongs to environmentally friendly electric vehicles. A study by the International Council on Clean Transportation shows that fully electric cars produce 73 percent less greenhouse gases than gasoline cars over their lifetime. This is better than previous estimates, as the efficiency of battery-powered cars has increased faster than expected. From lithium-ion batteries in small portable devices to large-scale storage systems, the demand is immense. Companies such as Canada Nickel Company and Green Bridge Metals supply the necessary raw materials.

Canada Nickel Company - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/canada-nickel-company-inc/ - has nickel and cobalt in its Crawford project in Ontario. The exploration program is being pushed forward with vigor.

Green Bridge Metals - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/green-bridge-metals-corp/ - specializes in battery metals, particularly copper, nickel, platinum, and palladium. Its projects are located in Canada and Minnesota.
