Platinum metals and copper, as well as gold and silver, are referred to as native metals because they occur in nature as pure chemical elements. Since native elements are usually relatively easy to access, copper, silver, and gold were already being mined in ancient times. Platinum and palladium are precious metals. Copper is a base metal that excels in electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. It is used in the electrical industry, in construction, in electric vehicles, in wind turbines, and in solar power systems.

Platinum and palladium are used in jewelry manufacturing and for catalytic converters in the automotive industry.  This year's high gold price has made platinum attractive as a precious metal for jewelry manufacturing. Copper, platinum, and palladium are highly resistant to chemical influences. This makes them essential in various high-tech applications. The largest copper mine is still likely to be the Escondida mine in the Atacama Desert in Chile. It accounts for around five percent of global copper production.

South Africa has the largest platinum reserves. In 2024, production volumes fell slightly compared to the previous year. Russia was the world's leading producer of palladium last year. Analysts expect the platinum deficit to continue this year as industrial use increases and investors use platinum for diversification purposes. Palladium also seems to be attracting more attention from investors. Well-positioned companies such as Sibanye-Stillwater and Meridian Mining should not be overlooked either.

Sibanye-Stillwater - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/sibanye-stillwater-ltd/ - is a large and successful producer of gold and platinum metals. Its projects are located in the US and South Africa. Battery metals and recycling are also part of its business.

Meridian Mining - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/meridian-mining-uk-societas/ - has the promising Cabaçal project (copper, gold, silver) in Brazil in a region with a well-developed and productive mining sector.
