Gold and Its Rise

(PresseBox) (Herisau, )
Gold has been mined for around 5,000 years. More than half of that has been mined in the past 50 years.

The special fascination that gold holds for people remains unbroken to this day. Today, the largest gold deposits are scattered across the globe. One region particularly rich in gold is the Witwatersrand region in South Africa. A great deal of gold has already been mined there. For a long time, South Africa was one of the world’s largest gold producers, and the region continues to play a major role in the gold market today. Other leading gold-producing countries include Russia, Australia, Canada, the U.S., Peru, and China.

The deepest gold mine in the world is located in South Africa. The Mponeng Mine is more than 4,000 meters deep, and working conditions are correspondingly challenging. The descent alone takes more than an hour. Geopolitical tensions have increased the importance of gold; central banks are expanding their gold reserves, and both private and institutional investors are turning to gold. In 2025, nearly 3,700 tons of gold were mined worldwide—the largest amount since records began and 0.6 percent more than in 2024. Some view 2025 as “Peak Gold,” meaning the global peak in production.

Developments in the Iran conflict are currently having a major impact on the price of gold. In any case, the price of the precious metal is currently in a consolidation phase, albeit at a high level. The underlying upward trend remains intact, even though it is still some way off the record high of just under $5,600 from the beginning of the year. The long-term upward trend demonstrates that gold serves as a hedge against political crises, inflation, and currency risks.

Sibanye-Stillwater - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/sibanye-stillwater-ltd/ - is one of the major producers of gold and platinum group metals. Its projects are located in the U.S. and South Africa. Battery metals such as nickel, chromium, copper, and cobalt, as well as recycling, are also part of the business. The South African gold operations have naturally become more profitable due to high gold prices in 2025.
