The N 997 freighter, 120 meters long and equipped with 50,000 kWh, has the largest battery ever used in shipping. The electric freighter will drive the development of zero-emission shipping. The N 997 will travel on medium-haul routes and it will save around 32 tons of CO2 every day. Considering how many freighters are on the move every day, enormous emissions can be avoided in this area. If the routes are shorter, electric mobility is not an issue anyway. This is demonstrated, for example, by the electric ferries in Norway. The first all-electric ferry has been operating there since 2015. It produces hardly any emissions and scores with operating costs that are 80 percent lower. Battery-electric trucks are also a nice thing in mining. They provide less noise, safer workplaces and exhaust emissions are avoided. So electrification of transportation makes mining operations more sustainable. One of the big players in electric trucks is Volvo Trucks. Its vehicles can also be used in urban transport, construction traffic or waste disposal.
The fact that a greener world can become a reality is thanks to the raw materials used in rechargeable batteries. These are primarily lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. The lithium is found in seawater or in inland waters such as salt lakes. In Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario, Targa Exploration (- https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/targa-exploration-corp/ -) is active on several projects. Also working on green energy and lithium is Gama Explorations (- https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/gama-explorations-inc/ -) in Quebec, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.
