Software AG, a global leader in business infrastructure software, today announced that it is providing the University of Leipzig with a software license package valued at €3 million. The donated software will enable the university to expand its practical course offerings in the information systems and computer science departments. Software AG has close academic ties to 130 prominent universities and research institutes around the world - including the University of Leipzig - as of the current semester 2009/2010. This new university partnership is particularly valuable to Software AG: as part of its University Relations program, Software AG aims to gradually develop Leipzig into a center for promoting young IT talent through academia.

The collaboration kicks off on October 20, 2009, in a project seminar at the University of Leipzig's Information Systems Institute (IWI). Under the leadership of Prof. Bogdan Franczyk, holder of a chair in information management, information systems students working toward master's degrees will spend a semester learning about modern SOA technologies and using them in practical projects, for the first time. Each student workstation will be outfitted with a software package worth ca. €300,000-including the webMethods product suite for serviceoriented architecture (SOA) and the Adabas database management system (both from Software AG) - as well as web2test Web testing software from itCampus.

An additional project seminar delving into business process management (BPM) on the basis of available IT solutions is planned at the institute level for Summer Semester 2010.

Dr. Sabine Freifrau von Schorlemer, Saxony's Minister of Science and Art:

"This example should set a precedent. Practical programs deliver the best conditions for the students to thoroughly prepare for their entry into professional life. T economy also benefits from high-quality graduates with a scientific degree and practical training."

Dr. Franz Häuser, Rector of the University of Leipzig:

"Practical course offerings are crucial for technology-oriented degree programs. Along with basic theoretical knowledge, it is essential for future IT specialists to learn about and master the industry's latest tools and technologies while completing their degrees. In this respect, I am extremely thankful that we have a new partner from industry on our side, in the form of a global corporation, Software AG. I also look forward to the long-term collaboration facilitated by itCampus-which is incidentally a successful spin-off of our university."

Dr. Rainer Alt, Chair of the University of Leipzig's Information Systems Institute (IWI):

"The support provided to the IWI by Software AG and itCampus constitutes an important element in the development of its research focus on the engineering of complex service systems. I am especially excited that we can now offer our students practical experience, which is a unique selling point for our master's degree program in information systems."

Jürgen Powik, Director of University Relations at Software AG:

"The University of Leipzig produces outstanding young computer scientists and business data processing specialists year after year. Continuing to boost these strengths is a top concern for us.In addition, the collaboration with Germany's second-oldest university has strategic value for Software AG: We want to help make the University of Leipzig a leader in the training of IT specialists."

Lars Nöbel, itCampus Research Coordinator:

"For us as a spin-off, our academic connection to the University of Leipzig is naturally very close. With the introduction of Software AG, which itCampus joined as a subsidiary earlier this year, this connection now reaches a new level. This is particularly good for the students, who can better prepare themselves for their future careers thanks to the practical course offerings."

Gartner noted that Software AG had growth of 55.9% (in U.S. dollar terms) in the SOA Governance market in 2008. The analyst firm ranked Software AG's worldwide market share at 13.7%, which topped the second-ranked competitor by three points.
