Intelligent freight wagons: TRANSWAGGON and ScandFibre equip 6,000 freight wagons with SAVVY® telematics devices

Quality is the investment of the future / Total connected wagons went from 3,000 to 6,000. TWA and SFL intensify partnership with SAVVY® Telematic Systems AG

(PresseBox) (Schaffhausen, )
Since 2015, and in collaboration with SAVVY Telematic Systems AG, wagon rental company TRANSWAGGON (TWA) and ScandFibre Logistics (SFL) first launched a pilot project to equip 50 freight wagons, and then, in a second step, another 3,000 freight wagons with state-of-the-art (SAVVY) telematics. The objective was to find a suitable technology to use transport-relevant data to improve rail logistics transparency and demonstrate the economic relevance of digitisation strategies.

Encouraged by the positive experience and the proof of quality presented by SAVVY® in connection with the first 3,000 equipped wagons, the upgrade of a total of 6,000 wagons was continued in 2017 and the contract period extended for another 5 years.

SAVVY’s cut-of-the-edge technology, coupled with its proven data availability and performance were the decisive criteria for choosing the Swiss telematics specialists once again”, Anders Nilsson, Managing Director TRANSWAGGON AB, Helsingborg, explains. “In view of the smooth, extremely fast implementation and very good experiences under normal operation conditions, it became clear to us that we want to continue the collaboration. This is why we are equipping 6,000 of our wagons with the SAVVY® CargoTrac telematics device and digitising our entire fleet step by step.” Nilsson adds.

Installation of the first 3,000 telematics units began in February 2017 and was completed without any disturbance to normal operations. Another 3,000 freight wagons will be equipped with the SAVVY® CargoTrac-R by May 2018.

We are, so far, very satisfied with this GPS-project. All actors in the rail freight industry must embrace the opportunities that the ongoing digitization offers in order to attract more cargo to rail.”- Pär Sund, Logistic Development ScandFibre Logistics

Decisive for this reliability is the SAVVY team’s 20 years of experience in developing highly accurate and robust telematics devices, and intelligent software algorithms that make the telematics device so intelligent that it only sends messages in real-time when absolutely necessary. Ten-minute notification intervals without a corresponding event are therefore unnecessary. This power-saving software intelligence feature ensures an autonomous device lifecycle of up to 15 years.

In addition, there are special requirement for installing and configuring the sensor technology: GPS/GNSS, sensors to record direction, flat spots, performance, and shocks as well as a range of data transmission functions. SAVVY® CargoTrac-R delivers all of the data needed to display transport processes transparently. Moreover, updates and configuration changes can be transmitted over the air and additional sensors to record temperature or full/empty status installed wirelessly.

SAVVY® CargoTrac-R offers four connection options for manufacturer-independent sensors. The SAVVY® Sense Gateway communicates wirelessly with the telematics devices.

We are proud that we meet the high technical requirements and user expectations of TWA and SFL”, says Aida Kaeser, CEO SAVVY® Telematic Systems AG. “Thanks to the continuously rising degree of coverage, our partners are also getting an increasingly accurate overview of their transport processes. It is on this basis that we work together to develop customised digital services surrounding controlling, operations, and maintenance processes to add more and more value for our partners and their customers.“
