Rheinmetall at EnforceTac 2017 - an extensive array of products for police and security forces

(PresseBox) (Düsseldorf, )
Rheinmetall feels a special obligation to make the best-possible equipment available to the people whose task it is to protect us. On 1-2 March 2017, the Düsseldorf-based tech enterprise for security and mobility solutions will be on hand at EnforceTac in Nuremberg, showcasing its extensive array of products for law enforcement and security forces.

The Survivor R tactical operations vehicle

The Survivor R is a compelling symbol of Rheinmetall’s extraordinary expertise in the worlds of security and mobility. Developed in cooperation with Achleitner, a well-known maker of special vehicles, it is the perfect answer for robust law enforcement operations. Based on a high-performance 4x4 MAN truck chassis, the Survivor R features a steel armour cab. Designed for a top speed of 100 km/h, this high-mobility vehicle combines tried-and-tested automotive engineering with state-of-the-art protection technology from Rheinmetall.

Depending on the given threat level, the armoured monocoque body can be individually and discretely equipped with add-on armour elements, while the air filtration system – a standard feature – provides reliable protection from nuclear, biological and chemical agents. Despite its excellent survivability, the vehicle’s outer appearance is unthreatening and deescalating, making it ideal for law enforcement operations. The interior is well lit, ergonomically designed, easy to clean and roomy enough to carry up to ten people with their personal kit as well as a full panoply of communication and command and control equipment. Systematic use of serially produced, standard commercial and military components has resulted in a reasonably priced vehicle – one which benefits from Rheinmetall MAN’s global service network, assuring efficient maintenance and repairs worldwide. This makes the Survivor R a cost-effective, easy-to-maintain vehicle platform with low lifecycle costs and outstanding operational readiness.

Ballistic protection

Rheinmetall’s VERHA (short for "Versatile Rheinmetall Armour") product line lends itself to a wide array of applications: ships, ground vehicles and aircraft as well as protective vest inserts. In a series of contracts, Rheinmetall has already supplied military and law enforcement customers with a number of different protection systems. These include partial armouring of ships, fibre-composite materials for premium-class armoured limousines, hard ballistic inserts for bullet-resistant vests, and quickly installable armour elements for helicopter cockpits.

In recent years Europe has witnessed the emergence of a new breed of terrorist: they operate in a military way, are often armed with military weapons, and who seek to kill as many people as possible as quickly as they can. Police forces all over Europe are gearing up to deal with high-intensity active shooter situations like these. When attacks of this type occur, it is usually ordinary patrol car officers who are the first on the scene.

In order to protect these officers from rifle fire, Rheinmetall has partnered with special equipment maker Linderhof-Taktik to develop bullet-resistant plate carriers. These can be transported in the patrol car and donned if required.

In addition, Rheinmetall’s forward-looking Sensing Armour technology enables maintenance and inspection of hard ballistic bullet-resistant vest inserts. An integrated sensor system embedded in the insert makes it possible to check for damage quickly and easily even when inserts appear to be intact – without the need for expensive x-rays.

Laser light modules

Rheinmetall has added two more modular components to its tried-and-tested family of VarioRay laser light modules. The VarioRay LowProfile and separately available 500-lumen weapon light provide the user with greater tactical flexibility – and this despite their extremely compact dimensions. The new products are a key means of enhancing the tactical efficiency of modern small arm systems. In addition, visitors to the Rheinmetall stand at EnforceTac 2017 can learn about other members of the VarioRay family as well as the Group’s MultiRay MR 500 and MR 800 fire control and aiming devices. Also on display is the TAC-Ray 1500 sniper add-on module, which features an integrated ballistic computer.

Special effect munitions

Rheinmetall also supplies a complete range of pyrotechnic products. For high-intensity intervention scenarios, Rheinmetall offers a tried-and-tested assortment of multiple-bang grenades as well as improved flash-bang grenades with bottom-top venting technology. They are safe to handle, highly accurate and very reliable.

In order to light up the area of operations at night, Rheinmetall also supplies a wide range of illumination and signalling products. Among other items, these include its versatile family of hand-held MITHRAS rockets; capable of attaining ranges of 300, 600 and 1,000 m, they provide illumination in the visible and infrared spectrum.

The RS556 – a modular, multipurpose rifle

Developed in cooperation with Steyr Mannlicher, Rheinmetall now offers the RS556, a modular, multipurpose 5.56mm x 45 cal. assault rifle. This gas-operated weapon features an adjustable short-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt. A special breech system with an emergency operation feature ensures that the weapon always functions reliably even in extreme operating conditions, e.g. in severely hot and cold environments.

The adjustable-length plastic stock clicks into seven different positions, meaning that personnel can adjust the RS556 to match their individual equipment profile in optimum fashion. The RS556 features several standard and optional NATO accessory rails, meaning that it can be fitted with various optics and night observation devices or laser light modules.

In a matter of seconds and without tools, the hammer-forged barrel can be easily exchanged. This means that the RS556 can be readily modified for various missions Moreover, the RS556 can be fitted with the RS40, a 40mm grenade launcher.

Rheinmetall’s 40mm system family

As one of the world’s foremost makers of advanced munitions, Rheinmetall offers an impressive array of 40mm x 46 cal. ammunition specially designed for a variety of different scenarios. These range from flash-bang grenades to marker rounds and from non-lethal impulse ammunition to highly effective special solutions enabling different "methods of entry", or MOE.

A leading system supplier, Rheinmetall also makes first-class 40mm weapons. These include the RS40 launcher, available in build-on and standalone versions; and the Magazine-Fed Grenade Launcher (MFGL), which features integrated hydraulic shock absorption.

Finally, the Group’s advanced fire control and aiming devices make Rheinmetall the perfect one-stop shop for 40mm technology.

Simulation and Training

Initial and advanced training continues to play a vital role in assuring operational effectiveness. Here, too, Rheinmetall offers multifaceted simulation and training solutions.

The Group’s LEGATUS live simulation system is an excellent way of training law enforcement personnel to thwart terror attacks and deal with live shooter situations. It underscores Rheinmetall’s leading role in developing advanced live simulation technology.

Three adjectives describe LEGATUS’s principal characteristics: robust, independent and intelligent. Robust – because it can operate in all kinds of different environments; independent – because wireless, mobile training solutions eliminate the need for fixed infrastructure; intelligent – because flexible, advanced IT solutions assure an effective, highly realistic training experience.

A detailed post-exercise evaluation forms an integral part of the live training process, enabling the team leader to understand how an operational situation developed and recognize possible weak points. LEGATUS components are on display at EnforceTac.
