Portwell PICO-8020: Compact Pico-ITX Motherboard Designed for Reliable Edge Computing

Pico-ITX Mainboard Built for Industrial Edge Computing

(PresseBox) (Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands, )
Portwell announces the PICO-8020, a compact Pico-ITX embedded board measuring 100mm x 72mm. Designed for space-constrained industrial environments, the board integrates either the Intel® Processor N150 or Intel Atom® x7000RE series (x7433RE or x7211RE), offering power-efficient performance alongside essential I/O, onboard security features, and extended temperature support (select SKUs). The PICO-8020 is well-suited for applications such as automation systems and medical devices, where edge computing, real-time control, and compact form factors are increasingly required, with growing adoption of vision-based automation and diagnostics.

Industrial-Grade Performance with Energy-Efficient Intel® Processor Options

Engineered for dependable integration, the PICO-8020 delivers essential features for industrial system designers: DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM, dual display support via HDMI® and LVDS, M.2 2242 M Key (PCIe/SATA) for SSDs, dual GbE via Intel® I210 Ethernet Controller, M.2 2230 E Key for Wi-Fi/Bluetooth modules, onboard TPM 2.0 for hardware-based security, two COM ports (RS-232/422/485), four USB ports (2× USB 3.2 Gen2, 2× USB 2.0), Realtek ALC897 audio header, 8× GPIO, and a flexible 12–24V DC input.

Powered by the Intel® Processor N150, the board supports cost- and power-sensitive designs with four cores up to 3.6 GHz and a 6 W TDP—enabling fanless operation for HMI, gateway, and data collection applications. For enhanced industrial requirements, the board also supports DDR5 with IBECC for improved reliability and long-life availability. Power consumption remains low across SKUs, typically ranging from 6–12 W for fanless systems: the Intel Atom® x7433RE operates around 9 W, while the x7211RE averages 6 W, supporting precise thermal management in compact, sealed deployments such as industrial enclosures or medical devices.

Designed for Industrial Automation and Medical Edge Deployments

In automation environments, the PICO-8020’s dual LAN with industrial-grade Intel® Ethernet PHYs, multi-protocol COM ports, 8× GPIO, and wide 12–24V input make it suitable for controlling conveyors, PLCs, and digital I/O systems. HDMI® and LVDS support dual HMI or line displays, while the M.2 E Key enables wireless connectivity for field devices. These features align with current automation priorities—edge AI, connected HMIs, and smart industrial devices—central to Industry 4.0 adoption.

In medical applications, the board supports imaging displays, data acquisition, and device control with stable dual-display output, secure boot via TPM 2.0, and multiple serial ports for peripheral integration. USB camera and scanner support, along with optional Wi-Fi, suit hospital environments where cabling is limited. The Intel Atom® x7000RE series’ integrated graphics, DL Boost (Intel® Deep Learning Boost)), and IPU6 (Image Processing Unit) enable compact systems to handle vision-assisted tasks—such as instrument tracking or triage analytics—at low power and cost, supporting the shift toward intelligent, secure, and efficient medical devices at the edge.

Built for Longevity and Sustainability in Edge Applications

PICO-8020 distills what industrial and healthcare OEMs need today: a compact board that’s easy to design into systems, robust in I/O and security, and flexible in compute—offering a choice of entry-level Intel® Processor N150 or Intel Atom® x7433RE/x7211RE, depending on application needs. By combining dual display, dual GbE, legacy-friendly serial ports, modern M.2 expansion, TPM 2.0, and 12–24V power input with processors optimized for fanless operation, the PICO-8020 helps customers reduce system size, simplify BOMs, and bring analytics and control closer to the process. As industrial and medical markets continue to adopt edge intelligence, driven by automation and connected devices, the PICO-8020 offers a practical, long-lifecycle platform for deploying smarter machines and embedded systems—today and into the next product generation.
