Ball catches and magnetic catches for simple but effective closure

So often it is the small elements that make the critical difference for design and usability. Without a doubt this includes ball catches and magnetic catches that – although unseen – can significantly optimize a machine, fixture or installation in qualitative terms. This is particularly the case when flaps, covers or doors need to offer quick access but still remain securely closed.

Ball catches of the series GN 4490 offer a very elegant and space-saving way to meet these requirements. The mounting block attached to the moving element engages in the ball catch precisely between the two spring-loaded balls for a positive and non-positive connection. Depending on the size and version, retaining force is between 25 and 150 Newtons. Both parts can be variably positioned, oriented either horizontally or vertically and with engagement from the front or the side. The ball catches are available in a variety of types and with various fastening options using threads or countersunk holes.

If the installation situation does not permit the desired positioning, such as for mounting on aluminum profiles, this problem can be easily solved with mounting plates for ball housings GN 4490.1 or with mounting plates for mounting blocks GN 4490.2.

Ball catches were originally used in furniture for holding small doors closed. While the Ganter standard parts use the same functioning principle, they have been completely redesigned. Industrial applications simply place far higher requirements on mounting options and quality. Available in four sizes, the ball catches have zinc die cast housings with stainless steel balls or corrosion-resistant stainless steel housings and ceramic balls.

As an alternative to mechanical closure, Ganter’s magnetic catches GN 4470 represent another option. They are a compact solution for use in practically all situations and are simpler to install than ball catches while offering the same tolerances. The strongest neodymium magnets are enclosed in a powder-coated zinc die cast housing, which is covered by a layer of rubber to reduce closing noises and prevent metal-on-metal contact. The magnetic elements are mounted using a slot or through hole. The magnet can be oriented upwards or to the side and combined with the matching stop plates to adapt to almost any installation situation. The zinc-plated stop plates are also useful when the cover or door is made of non-magnetic materials. GN 4470 can also be used with sliding doors. The interaction between the magnetic parts and the stops can be verified and configured in Ganter’s online shop based on a 3D drawing.
