Positive Prospects For Roof-Integrated Photovoltaic Systems

(PresseBox) (Luxembourg/ Oberursel, )
.
- Roof-integrated share of total PV market to double by 2015
- Inter-trade co-operation key to realise potential
- Results of a comprehensive market study on the development of roof-integrated photovoltaics in Europe

The importance of roof-integrated photovoltaics will significantly increase in all of Europe's major photovoltaics markets over the medium term. Currently the development of roof-integrated systems is primarily dependent on subsidies. However, market research commissioned by the Monier Group, one of the world's leading providers of building materials for pitched roofs, has shown that roof-integrated systems have strong potential to become independent of these subsidies. EuPD Research, a market research company specialised in photovoltaics, conducted the research on behalf of Monier. It provides insight into the segment of building-integrated (BIPV), and in particular roof-integrated photovoltaic systems (RIPV). Availability of market data for these systems had previously been limited.

The data show that Germany is likely to be the first country among the most important European markets that will develop from a market dependent on subsidies to a market independent of subsidies as power prices per kilowatt hour will be above feed-in-tariffs.

"The photovoltaic industry is currently going through a transformation, as the importance of feed-in-tariffs is decreasing in the different markets. Against the background of increasing power prices, it is becoming more and more attractive for system owners to consume the power they generate with their PV systems. Our model shows that roof-integrated photovoltaics will play an increasingly important role in this context", says Pepyn Dinandt, CEO of the Monier Group.

Doubling of roof-integrated systems' share of PV market and significant market potential

The current study results show an RIPV market volume of around 300 MWp in Europe's main PV markets in 2012. With 118 and 88 MWp respectively, Italy and France will have most installed capacity for these systems - mainly due to the favourable funding situation in these countries. While the RIPV market will not be unaffected by the recent decline in the entire PV industry the data indicate that the roof-integrated share of the market for new photovoltaic installations will increase from three percent in 2012 to six percent in 2015. Across all important markets, roof-integrated systems account for the majority of building-integrated photovoltaics.

Current market volume for roof-integrated photovoltaics in Germany is equivalent to around 120 million euros. Significant potential can be expected for this segment, given the available roof areas. Based on a conservative calculation taking into account the decreasing system prices and the different suitability of roof areas for PV systems an addressable market of around 4.3 billion euros can be expected. "From our perspective, three aspects play a particularly important role in unlocking this potential: First, it is important to create more knowledge and acceptance of the benefits of roof-integrated systems among customers. Secondly, the cooperation between various trades needs to be optimised. Thirdly, suppliers' service packages need to reflect the increased demands and expectations end- customers place on multifunctional products", explains Jens Milnikel, who heads the Monier Group's solar business line.

After-sales and easy installation play important role

The question of which aspects are most important in the sales of roof-integrated photovoltaic systems also formed part of the research commissioned by Monier. The experts said that after-sales service and guarantee have the highest priority, followed by long-term availability of spare parts and easy installation. "The roof is one of the most important functional parts of a building but, at the same, not easily accessible. That is why warranty and service packages for solar systems offering guarantee levels comparable to traditional roofing are of particular importance", adds Milnikel.

Established product brands with diverse solar offer

The Monier Group already has a wide range of high-quality solar products in many markets which are complemented by a number of important products that ensure safety and reliability. The range includes roof-integrated PV systems, PV tiles and modules, in-roof and on-roof mounting systems as well as further accessories. Monier is marketing its solar systems in various countries under its established product brands, e.g. Braas in Germany and Poland, Redland in the United Kingdom, Monier in France, Benelux as well as in Scandinavia, Wierer in Italy and Bramac in southeastern Europe, as well as other brands and countries.

The survey by Monier and EuPD Research entailed more than 130 interviews with installers, manufacturers and distributors in Germany, Italy, France and the United Kingdom at the end of 2011. A summary of the market analysis results can be downloaded as a white paper on:
