Reamers coated with the new cutting material HC 418 produce excellent surface finish with outstanding dimensional tolerance. And that goes beyond the standard range of materials commonly used for CVD coatings in the past. Why? Because the new cutting material is significantly ductile due to special process control during manufacturing, but just as wear-resistant as normal CVD coatings. The balanced proportion of hardness and ductility also ensures that the cutting material is ideally suited even for difficult machining situations such as interrupted cutting or unstable conditions. The smooth surface finish of the coating minimises friction on the workpiece. That makes it possible for chips to flow off more easily. The high wear resistance ensures consistency in machining, process reliability and uniform good quality.
Practical tests have demonstrated that the tool life of cutting material HC418 was more than doubled for tough cast materials such as spheroidal graphite cast iron (GGG) and vermicular graphite cast iron (GGV) as well as high-alloyed steels, compared to the cutting material used previously. Tool lives about 20 per cent longer are also achieved with materials such as grey cast iron (GG).
The entire standard programme of indexable inserts for guided reamers is available with the new HC418 cutting material.
