A strong partnership: Three major new orders as Knorr-Bremse becomes selected systems partner for new Alstom Coradia Stream train family

(PresseBox) (Munich, Germany, )
  • Knorr-Bremse signs a long-term framework contract with Alstom to supply systems for the Coradia Stream regional train family
  • Under the contract, which runs until the end of 2025, Knorr-Bremse will be a selected systems partner supplying braking, entrance and climate control systems for multiple units based on the Coradia Stream train family
  • Following three major new orders, Knorr-Bremse will supply these key systems for Coradia Stream regional trains purchased by customers in Denmark, Italy and northern Germany
  • The combined value of the initial orders is in the low three-digit million-euro range
Knorr-Bremse, the global market leader for braking systems and other rail and commercial vehicle systems, has further strengthened an existing partnership with Alstom that aims to deliver safe, sustainable and efficient rail transportation. Under a recently signed framework contract, Knorr-Bremse will enjoy a conditional exclusivity until at least 2025 for trains sourced from the high-performance, versatile Coradia Stream train family. The contract includes an option for a three-year extension until 2028. Starting in 2022, Knorr-Bremse will supply braking, entrance and climate control systems for three major regional transportation projects for operators Trenitalia (Italy) and Danske Statsbaner (DSB, Denmark), as well as the Expresskreuz Bremen network (LNVG) in Germany. It is anticipated that the work will continue into 2024.

“The transition to more sustainable modes of transportation means that demand for clean, reliable and available rail transportation in Europe is set to continue unabated,” explains Dr. Jürgen Wilder, Member of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse AG and responsible for the Rail Vehicle Systems division. “Leading rail operators, vehicle manufacturers and systems suppliers such as Knorr-Bremse are acknowledging this trend by investing in sustainable modern rail infrastructure and systems. We are delighted to have signed this framework contract, which consolidates our close, long-standing relationship with our customer Alstom, strengthens our status as a partner in the important and prestigious platform business, and contributes to the realization of tomorrow’s key mobility solutions.”

The framework contract means that Knorr-Bremse is now one of Alstom’s leading partners. Knorr-Bremse will supply high-quality electropneumatic braking systems, including the PistonSupply Eco oil-free compressor, the FlexControl flexible brake control unit, the SysControl electronic brake control system, electromagnetic track brakes and sanding systems. The Group will also supply two other types of systems for the regional trains: reliable, weight-optimized, low-maintenance entrance systems from its brand IFE, the global market leader for rail vehicle entrance systems, and modular, scalable, energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems from Merak, Knorr-Bremse’s brand for integrated climate control solutions. The framework contract creates synergies for both parties, making it easier for them to plan their business activities with this platform over the next few years.

Knorr-Bremse to supply systems for three major electric multiple units (EMU) orders

Alstom has added to its existing order book for the Coradia Stream train family with three new orders from three different European countries – and Knorr-Bremse will be a supplier for all three projects. The Company will supply systems for Trenitalia medium-capacity EMUs. Knorr-Bremse will also supply systems for Danish rail operator DSB, who has signed a framework agreement with Alstom with a first firm order of 100 Coradia Stream trains. In addition, Alstom has chosen Knorr-Bremse to supply systems for 34 modern high-capacity regional trains that are scheduled to start entering service on northern Germany’s Expresskreuz Bremen network from 2024. The three orders were officially placed with Knorr-Bremse in the third quarter of 2021; revenues will be recognized throughout the period during which the systems are supplied, from 2022 to 2024.

Alstom’s Coradia Stream offers state-of-the-art, low-floor, high-performance electric multiple units which meets today’s demands of regional and intercity transport. While the range continues to offer specific technical configurations adapted to the needs of each operator, a drive to improve standardization has delivered a single, versatile train family on which to build both regional and intercity trains.
