Jenoptik receives order for 5.5 million euros from Rheinmetall

The Jenoptik Defense & Civil Systems division will supply 62 optronic target acquisition systems and more than 300 laser rangefinders to the German systems company

The Jenoptik division will supply Rheinmetall with a further 62 thermal imaging target acquisition systems from the NYXUS BIRD series by the end of the first half of 2013. NYXUS BIRD is a multifunctional system that combines a number of components for military surveillance. The light 1.5 kilogram handheld system is comprised of, among others, a thermal imager, a rangefinder, GPS and a digital compass. Thanks to the combination of day vision and infrared optics, the system can be used in both daylight as well as complete darkness.

The NYXUS BIRD systems are integrated into the GLADIUS program which involves upgrading the equipment used by the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). Until the start of 2013 the GLADIUS program was run under the name "Future soldier - extended system".

The order by Rheinmetall for a total of 5.5 million euros also includes the delivery of more than 300 laser rangefinders over a period of three years. The ELEM series (Erbium Laser Rangefinder) measuring equipment is distinguished by its compact design, eye-safe operation and long-distance measurement. It is designed for use in multi-sensor platforms and fire control systems.

"The order from Rheinmetall, one of the leading systems companies, shows that we are at the forefront of innovative sensor systems, even in times of falling defense budgets", says Jenoptik CEO Dr. Michael Mertin.

Jenoptik has extensive expertise and know-how in the field of military reconnaissance systems. The development and production of laser rangefinders for a wide range of applications is based on about 40 years of experience. Jenoptik's powerful laser rangefinders have already been integrated into industrial and military systems by the Bundeswehr and numerous international partners and are successfully in use throughout the world.
