Das Konzept von DAXplus Maximum Sharpe Ratio und DAXplus Minimum Variance basiert auf der Portfoliotheorie. Während Auswahl und Gewichtung der Konstituenten beim Minimum Variance-Ansatz auf die Minimierung der Portfoliovarianz ausgerichtet sind, maximiert der Maximum Sharpe Ratio Index die so genannte Sharpe-Ratio. Diese Kennzahl beschreibt die Rendite eines Portfolios unter Berücksichtigung des Risikos der im Portfolio enthaltenen Aktien. Dabei misst die Sharpe-Ratio, wie stark die Rendite einer Geldanlage über dem risikofreien Zinssatz lag und bei welcher Volatilität diese Rendite erzielt wurde.
Die Grundgesamtheit für die neuen Indizes bilden die jeweils liquidesten Aktien. In den Indizes für die USA werden maximal je 50 Werte aufgenommen, in die für Japan Frankreich und Schweiz je 30 Aktien. Die Indizes werden quartalsweise angepasst und in den Währungen EUR, USD und GBP sowie als Price-Index und Total Return-Index berechnet.
Durch die neuen Portfolioindizes können Investoren direkt von den Erkenntnissen der Portfoliotheorie in systematischer Weise profitieren.
