Why a sweet potato makes sense on a thermoforming machine

The SKZ Plastics Centre offers a wide range of courses in the field of thermoforming

(PresseBox) (Würzburg, )
Thermoforming is an established process in plastics processing that is particularly economical for large-area components or small batch sizes. Targeted training courses are required to meet the increasing demands on quality, process efficiency and sustainability.

Especially in times of skilled labour shortages, it is not uncommon for unskilled employees to operate the machines. Thermoforming is particularly well suited as an entry-level technology: the process technology is relatively straightforward, especially with a single-station machine, the processes are quick to learn and the effects of process parameters can be observed directly on the product.

Integrating career changers into plastics processing companies is a major challenge. However, SKZ sees clear advantages in doing so, as existing knowledge can almost always be drawn upon.

In a modern working environment, it quickly becomes apparent that a baker or cook already knows that a thick plate needs to be heated for longer with less energy, just like a steak or a cake.

‘In addition to the theoretical content, it is particularly important to us to make what the participants have learned tangible, and we certainly use creative approaches to achieve this,’ says Mathias Ruckdeschel, Senior Trainer for Materials, Compounding and Extrusion at SKZ in Würzburg. ‘Our goal is to specifically address the existing skills of the course participants and combine them with application-oriented knowledge of plastics processing.’

Toolmaking clearly explained
A key challenge is understanding toolmaking. Here, the SKZ relies on a creative demonstration tool: a tool carved from a sweet potato.

‘Simple means can be used to demonstrate geometric requirements such as draft angles, undercuts and ventilation. This promotes understanding of the interactions between the tool and the moulded part,’ says Ruckdeschel. ‘In addition, inserting euro coins into the potato mould makes the importance of image accuracy tangible.’
Theory meets practice

At a time when machine manufacturers are cutting back on training, SKZ offers a wide range of further training courses in thermoforming – for both beginners and experienced plant operators. The course portfolio includes thermoforming for career changers, thermoforming errors – sources of error and solutions, and certified thermoforming set-up technician. The SKZ also offers a qualification in thermoforming.
