Sony’s NEW TopEmission OLED Displays

The latest addition to complement the FRAMOS imaging portfolio

(PresseBox) (Taufkirchen, )
SONY’s brand-new OLED (Organic LED) displays open up a whole new dimension of fast response, high-contrast image technology with precise color representation. Developed for applications in broadcasting, microscopy, and medical diagnostics, these displays use the recently developed Super Top Emission technology. Sony’s primary and long-term sales channel FRAMOS has recently expanded its comprehensive imaging portfolio with the addition of Sony’s OLED displays and now offers the full range of imaging components from sensors to cameras and accessories to displays.

Sony’s latest ECX-OLED series uses Micro Cavity Structures that provide the advantage of larger aperture and higher luminance due to halved half-value width of the wavelength. Use of the micro cavity leads to a wider color spectrum, less reflectance and a high dynamic range. With a 10µsec response time Sony OLEDs are a thousand times faster than LCDs and as a result show no motion blur. With excellent color reproduction from top to bottom and a high contrast of 5000:1 ratio even with lower luminance OLEDs have a higher JND (Just Noticeable Difference) index.

Dr. Ronald Müller from FRAMOS explains the fields of applications which benefit from these OLED displays: “It is very clear to the observer: Sony’s technical excellence in the design and manufacturing of OLEDs enables the end user to obtain more information from displayed images and helps to make critical decisions by looking at natural images. For broadcasting it leads to improved review of the shot material within the camera view and the master monitor. In microscopy and e.g., skin cancer diagnostics, mammography, operation surveillance and ultrasound monitoring, OLEDs allow for clearer, more reliable diagnoses.”

The OLED Displays are available from 7.4 to 24.5 inch with a 30 bit colour depth, quarter to full HD resolution and a maximum luminance from 350cd to 400cd. With a serial LVDS interface the OLEDs display units can easily be integrated into any system. The screen is controlled over an I²C port and the lifetime is greatly increased up to 35,000 hours via a special built-in algorithm.

Thanks to Sony’s unique expertise in both OLED displays and semiconductors, the first ultra-small, high-definition color OLED displays are also now available: Both the 0.5” format XGA version and the 0.7” format high-definition versions generate 90% NTSC color gamut with a maximum contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and an unnoticeable response delay of 10µs or less. The displays provide a more natural color reproduction, smoother gradation properties and superior moving picture quality especially as Electronic View Finders in digital single-lens cameras during capture, or for greater audio-visual impact in viewing 3D video using a head-mounted display. The micro OLEDs come as an all-in-one package configuration that provides all the required D/A converters, timing controllers and temperature correction for driving. As a stand-alone display unit, it is easy to design in and saves space when integrated on a PCB. The design-in by world leading broadcasting equipment manufacturers proves the value and price-performance-ratio of this new technology innovation.
