The company fünfeinhalb Funksysteme GmbH is presenting its new wireless solution, BlitzFunk®, at LogiMAT, specifically optimized to meet the requirements of automated guided vehicles and mobile robots. Unlike conventional systems, BlitzFunk® provides deterministic latency that can be calculated during the planning phase using simple mathematics. Its zero-latency roaming enables seamless handover from one access point to the next – without any downtime. This paves the way for centralized control and monitoring, eliminating many of the safety and control components previously built into the vehicles. The result: higher speeds, greater precision, lower hardware costs, and less maintenance effort.

Why latency is key

Current wireless systems are often judged solely by their data rate: the higher the data rate, the better the system appears. However, in many applications, entirely different criteria come to the forefront. In particular, latency and determinism are crucial in control applications for fast responses and safety. In the gaming world, latency is known as “ping” and determines victory or defeat. In industrial control, excessive or unpredictable latency means processes must run more slowly to maintain a defined level of accuracy and/or safety.

Centralized control, local cost savings

Today’s WLAN networks in intralogistics frequently only distribute transport orders: the vehicle receives a start and destination point and largely carries out the journey on its own. The required control functions are handled locally and thus must be installed in every single vehicle. Until now, there was no wireless system capable of offering stable, reliable, and above all: real-time communication for centralized control. In particular, the handover between access points was a recurring critical point, often leading to interruptions.

Tomorrow’s solution – already applicable today

Fully centralized fleets are the exception today – previous wireless communications systems have simply been too unreliable. With BlitzFunk®, that changes. Unlike classic WLAN or complex 5G setups, BlitzFunk® has been developed from the ground up for industrial real-time applications. It provides a one-way latency of less than 4 ms for 99.9999% of all transmission attempts at full Ethernet MTU (1500 bytes) and 6 Mbit/s net data rate – across the entire deployment. On top of that, it’s extremely user-friendly, following a plug-and-play principle wherever possible.
