Stereoscopic rear-projection for diverse applications

eyevis goes 3D with the eyevis 3D cube

(PresseBox) (Reutlingen, )
Like no other visual medium, stereoscopic projection/displaying is able to blur the boundaries between illusion and reality so that the observer dives into the picture. Stereoscopic projection can create an illusion of depth and thus adds the third dimension to an image.

This illusion is often needed for application where a twodimensional (2D) visualisation doesn't cover the presentation requirements of such applications such as simulators or CAD models.

With its new 3D rearprojection system, the eyeCube3D, eyevis steps into this third dimension. The eyevis 3D cubes produce images with impressive visual depth. The wide viewing angle allows a perfect view on flickerfree threedimensional images to anyone standing in front of the cubes. With its new 3D cube, developed in a joint venture with the 3D experts from INFITEC in Ulm (Germany), eyevis could merge the superior display technology of stereoscopic projection with the benefits of a rearprojection cube.

Of course the eyeCube3D features the ability of quickly and easily switching from 2D to 3D presentation and back what allows a flexible sequent presentation of 3D and non-3D signals without limitation.

Rear projection cubes

The famous modular and compact design of the eyevis cube range enables building display systems for threedimensional stereo applications of almost any size and resolution. Due to its housing, which prevents ambient light from interfering with the projection light path, less lumen at the projector are needed to reach the same brightness level on the screen as with a frontprojection. This results in lower power consumption as well as in a longer lifetime of the light source because the more brightness a light source has to generate, the quicker it will age (and vice versa). The special (black) rearprojection screen offers a brilliant black level and a perfect view due to its wide viewing angle. Both, but in particular the black level, are crucial factors in VR and simulation environments, respectively.

Rearprojection solution furthermore allows the operators to get close to the screen without interfering with the projection. Thus the eyeCube3D is highly suited for presentation (like in boardrooms) and interactive applications (like VR training). Unlike frontprojection solutions, the eyevis cube series comes without heat and noise dissipation into the operation environment and thus significantly reduce the disturbing factors for operators.

Stereoscopic projection

Stereoscopic projection enhances depth perception in the brain by providing the eyes of the viewer with two different images, representing two perspectives of the same object, with a minor deviation exactly equal to the perspectives that both eyes naturally receive in binocular vision.

Infitec(TM) filters

Infitec(TM) stands for interference filter technology. Special interference filters in the glasses and in the projector form the main item of technology and have given it this name. Infitec(TM) offers the benefit of delivering superior stereo separation without ghosting, full freedom of motion and independency of head tilt.

Two optical Infitec(TM) filters (illustrated by a thick and a dotted line) split the colour spectrum into 2 parts: one for the left and one for the right eye information.

For best performance, eyevis mounted each of the two Infitec(TM) filters into the optical light path of its DLP(TM) stereo projectors.

Thus, a stereoscopic image can be produced by putting the left eye information in the image of one projector, and the right eye information in the image of the other and the use of the matching Infitec(TM) filter in a pair of Infitec(TM) glasses in front of the corresponding eye (see below). Both projectors display their information at standard refresh rate.

Regarding colours, the left eye image appears to be slightly reddish whereas the right eye image appears to be slightly greenish. A simultaneous view at both images, however, makes these colour displacements invisible to a majority of viewers and colours appear in a natural way.

Advantage over Active Stereo
- Complete flickerfree image
- Improved performance in stereo lumens
- Less expensive glasses

Advantage over Polarisation (Passive Stereo)
- Superior separation with virtually no cross talk
- Independent of screen technology
- Better uniformity
