Smart packaging solutions as a tool for success in intralogistics

LogiMAT 2026 in Stuttgart

(PresseBox) (Munich, )
Stricter regulatory requirements and demanding market expectations pose significant challenges for manufacturers and buyers of packaging solutions. Exhibitors from around the world are coming to LogiMAT 2026 with new materials, systems, and recycling solutions, showcasing their latest intralogistics packaging innovations for streamlined processes, environmentally friendly consumables, integrated recycling, and long-term flexibility.

The packaging industry is facing profound structural change. In Germany alone, the industry has seen a double-digit percentage decline in production value since 2022. Regulatory requirements – such as the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which stipulates a drastic reduction in packaging waste – only exacerbate the matter. Today’s technology allows for smarter packaging, and customers and consumers alike have heightened expectations for sustainability. Manufacturers and suppliers are increasingly responding with biodegradable and reusable e-commerce and convenience packaging, as well as less conventional plastic developed with alternative materials using paper and recycled plastics or plant-based materials. The continued high volume of e-commerce is also promoting the development of reusable solutions and smart packaging with integrated technologies such as sensors and RFID chips for status monitoring and remote identification. Automated packaging solutions are increasingly the norm for efficient workflows. Modern packaging machines and flexible packaging lines that can be quickly adapted to different product formats boost production speed and precision. It is in this context that LogiMAT 2026 in Stuttgart is focusing on the industry’s latest packaging solutions as an element of success in smart, sustainable, cost-effective logistics processes. “Exhibitors are coming to Stuttgart to present new materials and mono-material technologies that reduce waste and promote the circular economy,” explains LogiMAT Exhibition Director Michael Ruchty from event organizer EUROEXPO Messe- und Kongress-GmbH in Munich. “Visitors can experience smart packaging with sensors and digital technology that promote reuse and are poised to play a key role in the packaging industry of tomorrow.”

BVM Brunner (Hall 6, Booth 6D11) is presenting its new fiber packaging machine Papertec 95/5 Comtex, and end-to-end e-commerce solution for shipping a wide variety of items in paper packaging. Papertec is fully automated, packaging goods in paper bags together with an address label and delivery note or invoice. The device is capable of processing up to 900 packages an hour with products up to 600 mm long. Kern and Müller (Hall 6, Booth 6B11) are co-presenting their combined solution featuring Kern’s PackOnTime2box system for automated multi-format packaging and Müller’s LogiPack document insertion system. Packaging is customized to the contents of each parcel, reducing material consumption and transport volumes while boosting efficiency and sustainability. PackOnTime2box can manage any combination of piece goods within a single package and designs robust packaging that can also be used for any returns. Panotec (Hall 6, Booth 6B57) is featuring on-demand packaging technologies in a virtual reality experience based on actual e-commerce and logistics working environments. Opera and Operetta are two complementary solutions that can be easily adapted to variable orders, SKUs, and picking and sorting strategies. Opera creates customized, reusable boxes whose reinforced structure features double-wall cardboard, an easy-to-open return solution, and a design that converts excess material into internal protective padding for a smaller material footprint. Operetta produces customized open, erected, ready-to-fill boxes for environments with high order variability.

Efficient packaging for varying product sizes

Sprick (Hall 1, Booth 1D45 and Hall 6, Booth 6F07) is highlighting its own solutions for optimizing how shipments are packaged. The VariMailer® Pro packaging and labeling system uses interactive robotics to produce custom-sized V-Mails® from rolls of environmentally friendly V-Board®. Prodinger Verpackung (Hall 6, Booth 6D03) also offers customizable packaging for products of various sizes with its automated box and tray solutions and is also presenting the Storopack PAPERplus Track system optimized product protection and cushioning material. Naturapack (Hall 6, Booth 6G01) is focusing on sustainability through paper air cushioning systems and printable paper adhesive tapes. Naturapack solutions can be easily integrated into existing packaging processes and greatly reduce the prevalence of plastic. TruePaper® printable packaging tape is a particular highlight, offering an attractive paper-based alternative to plastic strapping and banding materials. Beck Packautomaten (Hall 6, Booth 6C61) is presenting new PPWR-compliant automated packaging solutions. Fährenkämper (Hall 6, Booth 6A21) will be wowing visitors with horizontal custom wrapping machines made by Wrapsolut and with their standard and custom inline and standalone packaging machines in manual, semi-automated, and fully automated configurations.

Digital labeling and reusable ULDs

Experts anticipate strong growth in reusable pallets, containers, and packaging in the coming years. Managing these assets efficiently will require robust systems that can apply unique serial identification to each unit. Inotec Barcode Security (Hall 2, Booth 2B08) is responding with patented labeling, AIDC, and track-and-trace solutions with a focus on sustainable recycling and packaging pool solutions and high-quality labeling on challenging surfaces such as ESD materials, carbon, aluminum, and other metals. In-mould and RFID in-mould technologies offer highly durable, individually laminated, programmable printed labels that are firmly integrated into the packaging, making them tamper-proof. New product developments include compact RFID on-metal and on-ESD labels, innovative packaging pool labels, and new in-mould options for recycling and inventory use cases. CCL Faubel (Hall 2, Booth 2D07) is presenting the latest version of its Logistics Label, a smart label used to identify reusable containers and unit load devices (ULDs) in kanban and closed-loop processes. The Logistics Label can be used to remotely refresh an e-paper surface displaying the variable data stored on the RFID tag. The Logistics Label does not require a battery, making it particularly durable and maintenance-free.

Cab Produkttechnik (Hall 2, Booth 2D21) is presenting applicators for labeling molded parts with high-end capacities of up to 2,400 labels per minute. It’s also teaming up with Herma to present the jointly developed Hermes QI, the only system capable of printing and applying InNo-Liner adhesive material in fully automated packaging lines in a single step. Unlike standard linerless material, InNo-Liner is silicone-free and does not stick right away. The adhesive is activated only when atomized water vapor is introduced with a special applicator when applying a label to absorbent cardboard or similar paper-like surfaces. Buhl-Paperform (Hall 6, Booth 6G45) perfectly illustrates the innovations in new materials with the wide range of paper-based, tool-free, standardized packaging solutions as alternatives to EPS and high-maintenance corrugated cardboard. The innovations rely on a three-dimensional paper product known as moulded fiber, used to construct pallets in all three standardized formats. These stable ULDs are made from 100% recycled paper and can be fully recycled as paper around the world. They can also be nested, and their low net weight helps reduce freight costs. Moulded fiber is also featured in SlimPac and StackPac cushioning and tray systems. SlimPac is the universal standard packaging for flat, fragile products such as laptops, tablets, and displays. StackPac, developed specifically for automated environments, combines corrugated board trays with custom-sized interchangeable moulded fiber inlays for cost savings of up to two-thirds compared to foam-based solutions.

Recycled packaging materials

Bong GmbH (Hall 6, Booth 6C39), part of the Swedish Bong Group, is showcasing robust new shipping and packaging solutions for online shops, retail, and industry. The PPWR has shifted the focus to environmentally friendly paper packaging that helps reduce packaging material, weight, volume, and waste. One particular highlight is the e-Green mailer, developed specifically for online shops – made from 100% strong kraft paper and fully recyclable. e-Green mailers can be customized to their contents. Bong is also exhibiting AirPro Green, a high-quality cushioned mailer made entirely from paper. Paper embossed with paper bubbles inside the bag forms a strong cushioning layer that protects pressure-sensitive contents from impact. Duo Plast (Hall 6, Booth 6D34) also relies on recycled materials for its more sustainable stretch films, made from up to 65% waste from household collections (post-consumer recycled material, PCR). Their Duo Earth Yellow Back pallet wrapper can process film at high packaging speeds. Wirkaufenihrenabfall.de (Hall 3, Booth 3F35) has turned the acquisition of recycled materials into a successful business model. The aim is to purchase packaging film and cardboard from companies, convert the waste into valuable raw materials, and reintroduce it into the circular economy. The company does this by installing baling presses at its partner companies, reducing the volume of waste by more than 90% for cardboard and up to 98% for plastic film. Up to 1,500 kg of material can be concentrated on a single euro-pallet for collection. Cardboard packaging can be recycled and reused up to 12 times.

“These examples illustrate feasible models for how smart packaging solutions can satisfy the long-term need for efficiency and sustainability in intralogistics,” concludes Exhibition Director Ruchty. “Those who tap into this expertise today and invest in sustainable packaging technologies will be more competitive in the markets of tomorrow.”
