CompactPCI Serial gilt als Nachfolgetechnologie des mittlerweile veralteten CompactPCI-Standards. Die bewährte IEEE 1101.1-Mechanik aus der PICMG 2.0 CompactPCI-Spezifikation wird um die Protokolle USB2, USB3, SATA, PCI Express und Ethernet erweitert. Dieses Spektrum ermöglicht Highspeed-Prozesse, die nach der alten Spezifikation PICMG 2.0 CompactPCI noch nicht zu erreichen waren. Hierzu benutzt CompactPCI Serial serielle Punkt-zu-Punkt-Verbindungen zum Datendurchsatz. Diese Wahl ermöglicht eine immense Steigerung der Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit.
Da der alte Technologie-Standard aber nicht mit den neuen Steckverbindern kompatibel ist, wurde zum einfacheren Umstieg eine Hybridtechnologie entwickelt. Die Spezifikation trägt die Bezeichnung PICMG 2.30 CompactPCI PlusIO. Das bedeutet, dass alte PICMG 2.0 CompactPCI-Rechner via CompactPCI PlusIO mit CompactPCI Serial-Technologie zusammenarbeiten können. Es ist somit kein Komplettaustausch notwendig.
