METEC for EMG in Retrospect: Progress and Growth

(PresseBox) (Wenden, )
At this year's METEC, the EMG Metals business area was able to present its expanded portfolio of quality management systems and important product innovations in the field of strip guiding to a wide audience. EMG drew the attention of several hundred visitors from 24 different countries. Reflecting this international flavour, EMG's booth was staffed by a team of multi-national employees and EMG service- and sales partners from India, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Turkey, Thailand and Germany, of course. Key of all discussions was the deep understanding of the needs and expectations of users, future customers and partners and - at the same level of importance - the development of interpersonal relationships.

The main characteristics of the systems shown in the picture are summarised below. Further information is available under the web links listed.

The new online roughness measurement system EMG SORM®
A system that users of EMG solutions have been eagerly awaiting is the new generation of the EMG roughness measurement system EMG SORM®. With this system, the roughness parameters Ra, Rpc and the waviness parameter Wsa can be determined online in production reliably and without contact over the strip length and width at processing speeds of up to 350 m/min (Rpc 120 m/min). The EMG SORM® system uses a laser-optical scanning method to measure the microprofile of the surface. This surface profile can be compared with the profile recorded by a stylus instrument. The use of EMG SORM® makes it possible to detect roughness deviations at an early stage and to correct them during production (e.g., roll wear in the skin pass mill).
The system provides reliable roughness data over the strip length and width and can be used for all different surface structures (EBT, EDT, LBT, SBT, PRETEX®, ...) without special adaptation. In addition, the system has a very small footprint (less than 400 mm, in production direction), which makes it very easy and quick to integrate into the line.

EMG iCAM® for strip and slit strip width measurement
The EMG iCAM® CMOS camera-based system for strip and slit strip width measurement meets the extended requirements of users for an intelligent width measurement system and offers significant added value for the production and further processing of metallic strips. This concerns the possibility to also measure slit strip after the slitting process in a wide width range with high accuracy (+- 0.1 mm). A scalable width range from narrow strips (< 100 mm) to medium strips (100-600 mm) and wide strips (600-2200 mm) is covered. This includes the possibility to measure the width of slit strips in a range of typically 10 to 500 mm for each individual slit strip. Extended functionality, flexibility and intelligence characterise the younger sister of the EMG BREIMO width measuring system.

EMG iTiM Strip thickness measurement with X-ray, isotope and laser technology
With the integration of MESACON Messelektronik GmbH Dresden in 2022, the portfolio of EMG's Metals business unit was expanded to include the EMG iTiM family of strip thickness measurement systems. The thickness measurement systems used in the metals industry today are essentially based on three different technological approaches: X-ray, isotope and optical measurement methods. The latter are based on confocal optics and/or laser technology.

Each technology has its specific advantages and disadvantages, and ultimately the application determines the selection or even the most appropriate combination of measurement methods. Such systems must function reliably under all plant conditions in very harsh, confined installation locations, for a wide range of alloys and thickness values, and sometimes with very fast sampling times for control tasks.

The expansion of the EMG product portfolio to include all of the above thickness measurement methods (X-ray, isotopes, laser) and the associated design and software know-how opens up completely new possibilities for the user, not only for new plants, but also for cost-effective and time-critical modernisations and re-vamps.

Measurement of insulating layers with EMG SOLID® DFT
As a further highlight at the exhibitions was a real EMG SOLID® DFT measurement system for the determination of layer thicknesses of insulating protective coatings on electrical sheets and the demonstration of its function using sample sheets. The application of laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy EMG SOLID® LIF for the investigation of coating thickness promises to be a "gamechanger technology" enabling the replacement of unloved isotope emitters.

New generation of optical strip edge and centre measuring systems EMG EVK/EVM3
Last but not least, the new generation of the EMG EVK3 type optical strip edge and center positioners was exhibited in the EMG EVK/EVM. This is an excellent example of the continuous development and product improvement in the field of strip guiding. The EMG EVK3 optical strip edge measuring system is an innovative solution for strip guiding in flat metal production and offers numerous advantages and innovations compared to the predecessor model EMG EVK2/EVM2.
Highlights include improved handling during commissioning, which simplifies and speeds up the process. Settings can be made conveniently via a web browser and digital potentiometers, ensuring user-friendly and intuitive operation.

All in all METEC 2023 was an impressive proof of the vitality, future orientation, and continuous progress of the modern metals industry on a world-wide level.
