Koleje Mazowieckie starts operating DILAX's automatic passenger counting systems

(PresseBox) (Warsaw/Berlin, )
Koleje Mazowieckie (Masovian Railways, KM) has equipped 69 vehicles with modern DILAX counting systems. This system is compatible with other counting systems already installed in the vehicles or those that will be included in the future. With the new counting system, the organization wants to optimize services and adapt them more to the needs of its passengers.

KM has equipped the ER 75 "Flirt" vehicles, double-deck Bombardier and PESA cars, with DILAX’s automatic passenger counting system. The system not only delivers precise passenger counting data but can also receive and evaluate data from other counting systems thanks to the DILAX Citisense software. Thus, it is possible to generate uniform reports for a trip, a stop or a line.

"We are a train operator with a modern vehicle fleet. We have implemented innovative solutions for our passenger services, such as the Masovia Card, online tickets and cashless payments. Our portfolio of services is very broad and all our activities focus on increasing passenger satisfaction. For this purpose, we are opening a new chapter: We would like to learn more about the specific preferences of our passengers by identifying travel routes. With automatic passenger counting, we can see how passenger flows are distributed: Which sections of the route are the most popular? At which stops do most passenger board and alight? And on which days are our services used the most? With this knowledge we can adapt our services more to passengers’ expectations – and I hope that this will register directly in the level of passenger satisfaction," says Dariusz Grajda, board member and Commercial Director, KM.

The DILAX counting system is compatible with other counting systems that are already installed in KM vehicles or those that will be included in the future. The system is able to recognize the correct stop via the vehicle’s GPS coordinates and assign counting data accordingly. Based on the principle of a double light barrier, the sensors mounted in the door area determine the number of passengers and the direction of their movement. The results from each door are transmitted to the onboard computer in the leading vehicle which then transmits them wirelessly via GSM to the KM server. Here, the received data is processed, summarized and evaluated – resulting in uniform reports for individual stops, vehicles and lines for the relevant time periods (weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly).

"We are happy to have gained a customer like Koleje Mazowieckie who is focusing on the mobility of the future just like we are. Our innovative technologies for accurate passenger counting and our data management & predictive analytics software DILAX Citisense support the company on its way to becoming one of tomorrow's modern mobility providers. Koleje Mazowieckie is thus well equipped to face the ever-changing and complex requirements of the market: today, tomorrow and in the future," says Sassan Schirazi, Business Unit Director Public Mobility, DILAX.

Passenger satisfaction is paramount at Koleje Mazowieckie. Therefore, new projects are constantly being launched to improve the quality of the services offered. KM’s regular customer surveys show that these measures have been successful, especially in the newly designed lines – such as on line 2 Warsaw – Łuków, line 9 Warsaw – Działdowo or line 1 Warsaw – Skierniewice – where the technical possibilities of the modern train fleet are fully utilized.
