DW celebrates 50 years of quality journalism in Kiswahili

For half a century, Deutsche Welle (DW) has been broadcasting in Kiswahili to listeners in East Africa and the Great Lakes region. DW marks this anniversary with a special event in Tanzania

On February 22, DW will bring together opinion leaders from the region at the event in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. A highlight will be the panel discussion in Kiswahili on "Knowledge and Awareness through Media," organized in cooperation with GIZ.

Keynote speeches will be given by the German Ambassador, Klaus-Peter Brandes and by Andrea Schmidt, head of DW's Kiswahili Service. "For the last 50 years, DW has been committed to providing balanced news and reliable information, offering people in East Africa insights and detailed analysis on the issues that matter most," commented Schmidt.

The panel, chaired by DW's Mohammed Khelef, will include distinguished Tanzanian media professionals including Assah Andrew Mwambene (Director of Tanzania Information Services/Maelezo), Mohamed Abdulrahman (DW), Jenerali Ulimwengu (journalist), Valerie Msoka (Director of TAMWA) and Maggid Mjengwa (social media expert).

Participants in the event at the National Museum will also have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with DW's correspondents from Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, the DRC and Tanzania.

Supported by a network of correspondents, a professional team of journalists from five African countries works at DW's headquarters in Bonn to provide three hours of Kiswahili radio content per day. In addition to the award-winning educational program Learning by Ear, DW offers a huge variety of features on topics such as health, human rights, gender issues, the environment, youth, lifestyle and culture, which are also available on the Kiswahili homepage.

Deutsche Welle's Kiswahili programming, which is rebroadcast by partner stations throughout the region, enjoys great popularity among listeners. Its Facebook page consistently sparks lively debate among users.
