BMW Group wins Prestigious Fleet Hero Awards

For the third year in a row BMW Group has been awarded the acclaimed Industry Supplier Award at the Energy Saving Trust (EST) Fleet Hero Awards 2010, held in association with The Guardian and the CBI. The BMW Group was commended for its progressive approach to sustainability, with the use of EfficientDynamics and MINIMALISM technologies, as well as the quality of information it provides to fleet operators in the industry.

The Fleet Hero Awards, now in their fifth year, recognises companies and fleets that are striving to address climate change by reducing their carbon emissions. The EST received more than 90 entries from over 50 organisations, rewarding the best across 14 categories.

Stephen Chater, Corporate Operations Manager, said: “To win this award for the third year in a row is very important to BMW and MINI. This award clearly demonstrates that BMW Group’s continuing focus on sustainable mobility is being recognized by some of the most important customers in the fleet industry.”

Boom year for BMW M car sales

2010 saw worldwide growth in demand for high-performance sports cars with sales of BMW M vehicles rising by 14.2 per cent to 16,967units. The M3 continues to be the most popular M model, selling 5,729 units of the M3 Coupé worldwide in 2010. While the UK continues to be the third largest market for sales of M cars, registering 1,264 units in 2010, China has seen the most dynamic growth in 2010 where sales of M product rose by 355 per cent to 1,088 units.

M Sport packages, with their model specific aerodynamics, chassis, interior and exterior enhancements, continue to be a popular choice for UK BMW owners, making Britain the largest market for sales of M Sport packages in 2010. Worldwide the number of M Sport packages produced in 2010 rose by one per cent to 138,800, with the Korean car market showing the largest growth at 411 per cent.

Get your BMW on track for £49

For the second year BMW has teamed up with Club MSV and the BMW Car Club to offer all BMW owners the chance to take their BMW on the track at exclusive BMW only track events, giving them the chance to experience the full capabilities of their cars.

Five novice track evenings will take place across the country at some of the UK’s best test tracks, priced at just £49 a session. Following a safety briefing, participants will be taken on a familiarisation lap before putting theory into practice and discovering what it means to drive the ultimate driving machine on a famous motor racing circuit.

The first evening will be staged at Bedford Autodrome on Monday 11 April. Tiff Needell, former F1 driver, will be on hand at the inaugural event to offer some first class advice and encouragement. BMW Launches X3 Customer Video Portal

BMW X3 customers can now have unique access to an online video portal where they will be able to watch their car come to life. This exclusive footage allows them to watch the creation of their very own custom-made BMW at the company’s plant in Spartanburg.

Customers can view the footage by creating a BMW account at www.bmwusa.com and entering their X3 order number or VIN and watch as seven cameras in BMW’s South Carolina plant track the vehicle though several stages of final assembly. The video can then be downloaded and kept as a memento or shared with friends.

The new BMW X3 builds on the success of its first generation counterpart, offering drivers increased space, functionality, efficiency and comfort. Whilst its impressive performance figures of 184hp, 50.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 149g/km, for an xDrive20d, have ensured that sales have got off to a flying start.

One-two finish for BMWs at the Daytona 24 hours

The Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates team has achieved a one-two victory at the 49th Daytona 24 hours race with two BMW Riley Daytona Prototypes. After 720 laps the winning car crossed the finishing line 2.46 seconds ahead of its sister car. The victorious BMW Riley Daytona Prototype was powered by a Dinan Motorsport BMW 5.0-litre V8 engine and supported by BMW Motorsport.

“Congratulations to Chip Ganassi’s team on this huge success,” said BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. “It is fantastic to see BMW on top of the podium at the second important 24-hour race of the year, following the success in Dubai. The outstanding team performance in Daytona was rewarded with the first BMW overall victory at this race since 1976.”

This year’s race marked the 35th anniversary of BMW’s first overall victory at the 24 hour Daytona race. In 1976, Peter Gregg, Brian Redman and John Fitzpatrick won in a BMW 3.0 CSL.
