Designing efficient training courses

Train-the-Trainer seminar in France

(PresseBox) (Clermont de l’Oise, )
What’s the best way to teach automotive refinishing? That’s not an unusual question, but rather a standard issue for R-M, BASF Coatings’ paint brand. And while the properties of the products count, using them efficiently is equally important.

BASF Coatings employees regularly participate in Train-the-Trainer workshops, which are designed to help the teams from the Coatings Refinish Academy, from Marketing Services and the international consultants from the individual service offer “Programmes for Success” to make fascinating, fun and efficient training sessions.

“How can I meet all the needs of participants in a group that are at different levels?” “How do I resolve conflicts in a group?” “What media should I use in my training course?,” - these were some of the questions that kicked off the Train-the-Trainer seminar.

In three days, the team, along with the trainer from Machwürth Team International, worked out the answers to the questions during role-plays which simulated everyday situations in the training environment. The result proves that good teaching methods make for efficiency and profitability in the bodyshop. But how exactly does that work?

The participants practice typical group dynamic behavior. For instance, they learn tips which can help a group to overcome the “chaos” phase to function as a whole with full synergy. They find out about different types of learners, so that they can adapt the teaching methods to the different requirements of each delegate.

For example, it is extremely useful for trainers to be aware that important messages are internalized best if the learners say or do them themselves. On top of that, they learn that PowerPoint slides are not the be-all and end-all of teaching, there are many varied and creative methods of communicating with the group. And there’s a way to ward off post-lunch break drowsiness: the trainers use a little game called an “activator”, which helps kick off a new topic or add a burst of energy. “I get a lot out of these seminars. They give you a lot of fresh ideas for training. You learn how to get across your expertise in a variety of ways and, best of all, how to make it sink in,” says Michel Bohlinger, Global Trainer at the R-M Academy.

R-M offers its customers a varied portfolio of seminars both for practical application techniques, techniques for matching colours to make an invisible repair, and also a complete range of management seminars based upon the “Programmes for Success”. Marketing Services have also launched trainings on their special R-M software (Color Explorer II, Shopmaster…), which are precious aids for colour formulae research and bodyshop management.

“R-M is a premium brand with high-quality products and services. In order for our customers to enjoy the full benefits of the brand offer, they need to receive training. Our aim is to transfer our knowledge and know-how in the most efficient and long-lasting way: we do not want to “improvise”, we want our trainers to be the best qualified in the market to make our trainings perfectly professional. For this, we did not hesitate to contact an external partner who is a recognized expert in the field of adult learning,” says Rosalind Borrega of the R-M Refinish Competence Centre, explaining the concept.

For R-M, technical expertise combined with state-of-the-art teaching methods are the key to success. It’s obvious that they have hit upon the right combination. Loads of “aha moments” during the seminar show there is always still something to learn, even for experts. That makes service for customers better.
