Quantencomputer sind potentiell vielfach leistungsfähiger als herkömmliche Computer und könnten in Zukunft komplexe Probleme in der medizinischen Forschung, bei der Energieversorgung, der Logistik oder im Bereich der Künstlichen Intelligenz lösen. Dem Leipziger Startup SaxonQ – gegründet 2021 – ist es gelungen, einen Quantencomputer industrietauglich zu konstruieren – weg von den bisherigen raumfüllenden Anlagen und hin zur handlichen, flexiblen Box. Entscheidend dafür ist ein aus der Halbleitertechnologie bewährtes Verfahren. Damit werden die Qubits, die Recheneinheiten des Quantencomputers, auf einem wenige Millimeter kleinen Diamant-Chip erzeugt. Diese Prozessoren kommen im Gegensatz zu bisherigen Quantenrechnern ohne Kühlung und komplexe Infrastruktur aus und sind unempfindlich gegen Störungen. Das System wird bereits von Großkunden genutzt und zielt auf völlig neue Anwendungen von Quantencomputern, etwa in Satelliten, beim autonomen Fahren oder in einigen Jahren sogar im Smartphone.
