Seit über 70 Jahren steht das FIR an der RWTH Aachen für die Steigerung der industriellen Wertschöpfung. Als Forschungsinstitut für Rationalisierung 1953 gegründet, ist das FIR heute führend in der digitalen Transformation der produzierenden Industrie.

Im Fokus steht die Transformation der industriellen Kernbereiche Produktion und Dienstleistung mit dem Ziel, die langfristige Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Unternehmen zu stärken. Ein zentrales Element ist dabei die Wertsteigernde Kreislaufwirtschaft als Grundlage für profitables und nachhaltiges Wirtschaften. Zukunftsweisende Strategien für die produzierende Industrie zu entwickeln und die Potenziale bewährter und neuer Technologien zu erschließen, bilden dafür das Fundament.

Als Johannes-Rau-Forschungsinstitut unterstützt das FIR die Forschungsstrategie des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen und beteiligt sich aktiv an den Landesclustern, um den Standort NRW und Deutschland zu stärken.
