Brandenburg Labs GmbH

The vision of Brandenburg Labs is to connect the digital and real world through immersive audio and unlock the full potential of human hearing. Therefore, the start-up company creates immersive audio experiences for headphones, as intuitive as real life. This enables everyone to dive deep into any soundscape. Brandenburg Labs, established in 2019 in Ilmenau, Germany, was founded by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karlheinz Brandenburg, best known as co-inventor of the mp3 format. As a spin-off of the Ilmenau University of Technology and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology, Brandenburg Labs can draw on many years of research in the field of audio at these and other institutions.

The creation of an immersive audio experience for headphones has posed enormous challenges to science and industry for decades. Brandenburg Labs, equipped with an interdisciplinary and diverse team comprising 18 talented individuals, takes on these challenges. The company has developed a proof-of-concept system, which has gained wide recognition and admiration by more than 700 audio experts at conferences and conventions worldwide, proving it to be superior to any other currently available system. Building upon this innovative technology, Brandenburg Labs introduces innovative solutions and products to the market, enhancing digital life through immersive audio.

The technology allows to recreate real acoustic environments via headphones or to create new realistic listening environments. In this way, virtual sounds blend seamlessly into users' lives and bridge the gap between the real and digital worlds. Soon, Brandenburg Labs will market headphone-based business-to-business solutions for music production, Augmented Reality systems, virtual prototyping, audio guides, gaming and many more.

With a primary objective of introducing immersive audio to the consumer headphone market, Brandenburg Labs aspires to empower individuals to explore and interact with complete soundscapes, opening up the third dimension of headphone audio. In order to achieve this mission, the company is collaborating with partners and hardware manufacturers.
