Spezielle Rennveranstaltungen für Universitäts-Teams sind nichts Neues. Doch nun schickt die japanische Tokai University am 14. Juni 2008 erstmals ein Studenten-Geschwader zu den offiziellen 24 Stunden von Le Mans - das hat es in den 85 Jahren dieses legendären Motorsportveranstaltung noch nicht gegeben. Unterstützt wird das "Le Mans Challenge Project" vom Reifenhersteller YOKOHAMA, der nicht nur seine ADVAN-Rennreifen, sondern auch mehr als 20 Jahre Erfahrung auf dem französischen Kurs einbringt. Gestartet wird in der höchsten Klasse LMP1 (Prototypen) mit einem modifizierten Courage-Oreca, der bereits einmal an den 24 Stunden teilnahm. Das Triebwerk, ein 4-Liter-V8-Twin-Turbo, wurde jedoch in Eigenregie entwickelt.
