Wacker's New Sustainability Report Meets Top Standard of the Global Reporting Initiative
With its new Sustainability Report, the Munich-based chemical company provides a transparent and comprehensive account of its sustainability efforts for the benefit of its customers, business partners, employees, shareholders, the public, non-governmental organizations, regulatory bodies and the neighbors of its various sites.
The report covers traditional sustainability topics - such as environmental protection, health, workplace and plant safety, and sustainability management - as well as topics such as equal opportunity, demographics, work-life balance and international disaster aid. Compared to the 2009/2010 edition, WACKER has considerably broadened the topics reported on. The new report is the first to include specific energy targets, figures on indirect energy consumption, and information on the relationship between water demand and the availability of fresh water.
The facts and figures in the Sustainability Report illustrate that WACKER has made substantial progress in many areas that are of importance to sustainable business management. For example, the company has reduced its specific energy consumption by 22 percent since 2007.
Sustainability is a core component of WACKER's business model. The chemical company sees the highly promising fields of energy, urbanization and construction, digitization, and rising affluence in emerging markets as the main drivers for further growth. What's more, the importance of sustainability to WACKER is demonstrated by the fact that the company has made it one of its five strategic goals and has compiled its own business principles in this respect.
WACKER's relief fund (WACKER HILFSFONDS), which provides aid after natural disasters, has continued to support projects in China, Haiti, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The focus was on the reconstruction and operation of schools. Around a third of WACKER's workforce in Germany is supporting the projects through a cent-donation program, set up in 2012. The employees agree to have their monthly salary rounded down to the nearest euro amount and donate the difference to WACKER's relief fund. The company matches its employees' donations. In this way, the program generates annual funds of over €50,000.
Accessible at www.wacker.com/sustainabilityreport in English and German, the report offers easy navigation and interactive functions such as key-figure comparisons and download options. Additionally, the report is available for download as a printable PDF file at www.wacker.com/sustainability.
