Zum Gedenken an das Leben und Wirken von Dr. Joseph Carlebach (1883-1942), bis zu seiner Deportation 1941 nach Riga, der letzte Oberrabbiner der Gemeinden Altona (1926-1936) und Hamburg (1936-1941), verleiht die Universität Hamburg für herausragende wissenschaftliche Beiträge zur jüdischen Geschichte, Religion und Kultur zum dritten Mal den Joseph Carlebach-Preis. Die Auszeichnung wird dieses Jahr stellvertretend für die Universitätspräsidentin Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil.
