Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) stattet die dezentralen Peripheriegeräte Simatic ET 200S und ET 200X mit mehr Funktionen und höherer Leistung aus. Drei neue CPUs für die ET200-Basisstationen bieten eine oder zwei Profibus-DP-Schnittstellen, verfügen mit 48 Kilobyte über die doppelte Speicherkapazität wie bisher und sind mehr als zweimal so schnell wie ihre Vorgängermodelle. Als Profibus-Master lassen sie sich als "Kopfsteuerung" eines Profibus-Netzes betreiben. Damit erstellt der Maschinenbauer autarke, modularisierte und damit immer wieder verwendbare, ausgetestete Automatisierungslösungen - bevor er sie vor Ort in Betrieb nimmt. Dort bindet er die autarken Einheiten einfach per Profibus-/Industrial-Ethernet-Link in die Anlage einbinden.
