From the outset, RWE has been one of the principal sponsors of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. The energy company is supporting the RUHR.2010 GmbH with more than €2.5 million. A portion of these funds will go towards promoting the "Ruhr Atolls" as a flagship project of RUHR.2010. In addition, RWE is supporting a number of other projects in the Ruhr metropolitan area. "It was a very easy and quick decision on our part to support the Capital of Culture. We are part of the Ruhr region. We grew as a company here and the Ruhr region grew with us", commented Alwin Fitting, Member of the RWE AG Board responsible for Human Resources and the cultural involvement of the Group.

RWE's activities are taking place under the heading "EnergieKulturRuhr" (EnergyCultureRuhr), which provides the framework for a range of diverse activities and ideas. They were developed and promoted at RWE Headquarters and in the Group companies located in the region. "The concept of energy is a great way of demonstrating the exchange between art, the economy and society", Fitting continued. "After all, it is the key topic of the 21st century". The Ruhr Atolls take a look at this theme from an artistic perspective.

RWE is a promoter of culture - a commitment that goes far beyond the City of Culture year - because RWE believes it has the energy to lead. "But to do this, we don't need to reinvent the wheel, we can build on what we already have", explained Fitting in describing the basis of the sponsorship concept for RUHR.2010. One example is the support for the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation with its MUS-E programme, a musical education project in schools. On the island of Brehm, young people from MUS-E schools and other Essen schools will come together to experiment and to learn. The neighbouring atolls and the art teachers involved will act as strong catalysts in this process.

In addition to the Ruhr Atolls a further focal point is the exhibition "A star is born", in the Folkwang Museum, which will have reopened in time for the event. The extensive special exhibition of the museum's photographic collection will be displaying around 250 objects on the topic "Photography and rock since Elvis Presley".

A number of projects that RWE companies have initiated in the region and will carry out in cooperation with various partners stand for the close connection the company has to the Ruhr metropolitan area. For example:

- Dortmund U - to be extended as a location for the creative industries
- Roadside art markets on the Ruhrtal bicycle route from Winterberg to Duisburg
- The youth project "Ruhr Nation"
- The permanent exhibition "Virtual Water" in the "Aquarius" in Muelheim

As of autumn 2009, the online cultural portal "energiekulturruhr.de" will provide an overview of all of RWE's Capital of Culture activities. The portal is meant both as a central information source for RWE employees and will also be open for dialogue with interested citizens, art lovers and artists themselves.
